A Quick Look At VAGCOM Clones VS. Genuine VAGCOM from RossTech

When it comes to diagnostic tools, there are going to be a lot of opinions on the matter. You can easily find yourself swimming in a variety of different options. At first glance, you’re going to find that this may all seem simple, and easy to go through. The problem that you’re going to run into is in regards to clones, pirated software, scams, and more.

Just like regular computer software, diagnostic options are subject to a lot of issues overall. It’s for that reason that you should look at a few things that could help you gain the upper hand in figuring out what VCDS is going to be worth your while.

VCDS stands for Vag-Com Diagnostic System, and it’s a software package that is meant to diagnose certain car problems. It’s a Windows based software, and it usually helps with Volkswagen Cars.

Now, these are stable in most cases, but there are a few things that you will need to consider before you purchase this option.

Picking Up The VAGCOM Option

First and foremost, you’re going to find that this is a software solution that works with OBD-II scanners and other scanners that you may run into. It’s something that you are going to have to denote overall.

Do not assume that by picking up this software, you are going to be able to just scan at will. You need to have a scanner first, and one that can run this program. If you don’t, then this is going to be pointless.

You need to have a OBD-II scanner that can run the VAGCOM solution, which is usually after 1996. There are some scanners that come with this bundled in them, which is a good, cost effective solution to consider.

However, make sure that you are in fact buying a genuine software package, and not something that has been pirated.

Shareware Options

When it comes to the VAGCOM option, you will find that there are some shareware options floating around. These are good to a point. While they are in fact shareware, and they will not cost you as much as the official solution, you will want to invest in the official option for sure.

The official option is going to cost you, and will be available from RossTech. IF you want to test this before buying, then find a scanner that has the shareware version pre-installed so that you can get a feel for the software itself.

VAGCOM Clones

Here’s the thing, the cost of this software can be quite hefty for some. Not including the scanner that will run this, you’re going to find that the cost can be upwards of $449 for the mobile platform. For other options, you’ll have to pay $249 for the privilege to use this. However, this is a diagnostic system that is specific to Volkswagen.

The real one is going to come with a list of features, updates, support, and more.

Now, in regards to clones, the interesting thing is that they can be quite good. Many people in forums today will cite that these are definitely up to par with the original.

However, there’s a reason why they are clones, and not the real deal. There are several attributes that come with this. The following are just a few of the things that will come through if you focus on picking up a clone instead of a genuine option from RossTech.

Cheaper – the first thing that you will see is the cost. The cost ratio is going to be far less. Some instances have been listed for as low as $60 online.

Lacking Updates – you will not get the up to date software or updates if you go with VAGCOM clones. Simple as that. While there are some software elements that will be in place, it will not be as good as the original.

No Support – let’s say that you’re stuck. If you are stuck and you are not sure how to move forward you will end up dealing with a variety of issues. With the cloned solution, you cannot ask for help from the manufacturer. There is no way that you can call RossTech and get support, or any type of help.

Double The Price – here’s the big thing that you’ll end up dealing with, and it’s paying double. You’ll pay for the clone, and when you realize that it’s not complete, or it’s out dated, then you will be paying the full price for the VAGCOM from RossTech.

As you can see, it’s not always a great idea to go with a cloned solution. While it may save you money at first glance, you’ll end up paying far more after the fact. It’s just not that worthwhile, even though some people will swear by this solution.

Genuine VAGCOM From Rosstech

The thing that you are going to find to be true about diagnostics is simple, the more you pay, and from the right source, the more you get. In the case of buying genuine VAGCOM from RossTech, you are going to get full support systems. You will be able to use a lite version, mobile version, or get the full option for a computer.

You will also be able to upgrade, get literature, manuals, and much more. Simply put, this is going to be worth purchasing, for the updates alone.

There’s an old adage about buying things cheap, and not lasting. You don’t want to risk buying a diagnostics element that is not going to work out for you. Don’t focus on the wrong things here. Focus on picking up a solution that is genuine, and is going to work long term.

Assuming that you are serious about diagnostics. Now, there are those that will argue that you can get away with a VAGCOM clone. However, if you go that route, be prepared to deal with issues, have no support in place, and in some cases, only get the “lite” version.

When you skimp on this, you get limited results, so be careful as to how you progress here.

  2. Downloaded vcds lite last night and just tried it now. Connected to my cable straight away and connected to the car. Was able to scan engine, abs and airbags fine. Altho it gets no response from my central locking or my convience module. Which is why i wanted it. Boot doesnt lock. Also in basic functions, it gives the options for measuring blocks.. Whats that involve? What can i test?
