OBD II Scanner – How to choose the right OBD-II scanner for your car(s)

What is an OBD-II scanner?

Some of you might already be familiar with this important tech piece but for those who don’t, let me briefly describe it for you. OBD II stands for On board diagnostics and constitutes a standard system of computer network in your car or truck.

It is used for diagnosing (or more accurately, self diagnosing) any issues concerned with the automobile and reporting it to the user.

This revolutionary system was developed and implemented by the society of Automobile Engineers known as the SAE.

Now you might be wondering how OBD-II scanners are different from their predecessors, the OBD I scanners. In the latter the design and working was OEM–specific while their nest generation uses similar communication processes, connectors and code patterns.

This allows for a more extensive use of the equipment in automobiles of different makes and models i.e. automobiles produced after the year 1995 can be easily incorporated with these self diagnostic devices.

How to choose the right OBD II scanner?

By now, you might have gained some knowledge about OBD-II scanners and their functionality. Now let us look at all the different considerations to be taken into account while choosing an OBD II scanner.

The task of choosing an OBD II scanner would not be as easy as it seems. When setting out to buy one for yourselves you need to have precise knowledge on what your car wants.

As each car is unique and needs to be treated that way, choosing the right OBD II scanner is a somewhat hectic task.

However, once the installations are made your car is safer and the experience would be better than ever before. The right OBD II scanner would keep you safe and confident while on your drives.

What to look for when making the purchase

While setting out to purchase an OBD II scanner for your car, there are a few considerations you need to take care of. So here are some basic questions that you need to ask yourselves before making the purchase.

What level of functionality do you expect from your OBD-II Scanner?

Firstly make up your mind on what kind of a tool you really intend to have, whether you need a high end model or just a basic one.

The basic code reader is characterized by limited functionality. It is capable of a few things all of which are basically intended for notifying the user about an issue that needs to be diagnosed.

For those people who are a low on budget a basic code reader would be a good option.

The basic models suffers from an issue concerned with the compatibility i.e. not all car models can use these basic code readers.

Also don’t get me wrong, the basic model is also quite an effective tool and a possible life saver.

On the other hand, the high end models are more advanced and provide great confidence and safety for the driver. They are more compatible for extensive use and is loaded with features and functionalities such as:

  • ABS and air bad control – The system can detect the anti lock breaking systems, air bags and some more functions of the car and is also capable of resetting them.
  • On screen information – the diagnostic codes are displayed right on the screen providing a better user experience.
  • Printability – the detected codes and subsequent results can be made into physical copies i.e. the information can be delivered to a printer if necessary.
  • Live feed – All information regarding the working state of the automobile and its sensors are displayed in real-time. This provides the user with precise and updated information and anything out of the ordinary is simultaneously reported.
  • Storage and data logging – The data and information are all stored safely in the sensor memory allowing it to be accessed anytime in the future. This data can be used in the identification of a particular car as well as assessing its past.

Is there any scope for upgrading the existing model?

Cheaper OBD II systems often provide no scope for any sort of upgrade. So it is often recommended that you go for high end models which might be a bit expensive at first but in the long run seems to be quite an acceptable bargain if the model can be updated in the future.

The importance of updating these diagnostic devices can be understood by considering the case of a smart phone. You would update apps on your phone to get better features and usability and in the same way you need to upgrade these systems as well to get more features and to be used with newer car models.

These updates may not be free always, so it is always advisable that you enquire about the costs well in advance.

Would a particular model of OBD-II system be compatible with your car?

OBD II systems are basically of five types based on the signal processing procedure. So you should always ensure that you would not face any compatibility issues when installing one of these types in your car.

There may be some products in the market advertised as cent percent compatible, but it is always safe to ensure the same before purchase.

What type of OBD-II scanner do you require?

  1. PC based scanners – There are PC based automatic scanners available in the market and they draw power from the PC to operate. They are effective systems for diagnosing as well as troubleshooting issues in your automobile.
    pc-based-scanner
  2. OBD II Bluetooth scanners – These systems works through your smart phones or tablets by making use of Bluetooth connectivity. This works even with computers and serves as an advanced scan tool that detects, notifies and troubleshoots any engine or sensor issues that your vehicle may face.

    bluetooth-car-scanner
  3. The hand-held scanners – Handheld automatic scanning devices are used mainly by professionals and mechanics to detect and diagnose issues concerned with the engine, brakes or even the transmission systems of an automobile.
They are more sturdy and advanced devices with better and more informative display of data.
The system comes in a package and comprises of a power supply, a cable to transmit the power, an additional battery pack and so on.

The brand matters

In the case of products like an OBD 2 scanner where no chances can be taken, the brand is a very important factor while making the choice.

In the case of OBD II scanners, the market is rich in quality brands that have offered great quality and service over the years.

So the choice is not limited even when we are looking for the top brands in the list.

Some of the brand names you can consider are Innova, Autel, Actron, OTC, ScanTool, Bluedriver, Vgate, Big Banana, Lauch Tech USA and Bafx Products.

Each of these products offers large varieties of product ranges resulting in a mammoth collection of products.

Characteristics of an ideal OBD-II scanner

We may define some basic characteristics that an OBD-II scanner must possess in order to qualify as a top purchase.

  • The delay in producing the reading should be as small as possible i.e. the diagnostic system should produce a result with great accuracy instantaneously.

It runs on both android as well ios platforms and provides an easy way to stay safe in your drives.
The system also offers different possible solutions for a single fault in the device. The notable drawbacks of this OBD2 scanner are its incompatibility on windows platform and shakiness of the Bluetooth connectivity.
The product is fairly priced at 100$ and can be bought through online as well as local stores.

    bluedriver-obd2
  • Actron CP9670 Autoscanner: Actron is a pioneer brand when it comes to OBD2 scanners. Thus this product came in to the market with a lot of expectations.
However, the brand seems to withhold its reputation through premium service and quality in this product as well.
The design of the product is compact with a beautiful LCD display for showing all the readings.
The product is offered at a price tag of 100$. With such a brand name and quality one cannot argue much about the price tag. Other notable features of the product include multilingual capabilities, updatable features and functions and a best in class battery life.
It is also highly compatible and works well with almost any make or model.
    actron-cp9670

Conclusion

Choosing the right OBD II scanner is strenuous task and calls for a great deal of research and knowledge.

The different products brought to the market by quality brands are all advantageous in their own ways and falls short in some aspects too.

Thus a single product that fits all criterion of an ideal product is nonexistent. As the requirements also vary from customer to customer, the manufacturers cannot design a product that suits everyone alike.

So it is us consumers who needs to make the right choices from the vast collection of products available out there.

This may require a great deal of effort in the form of research done online as well as that through your friends and relations.

It also requires great knowledge o various aspects of your car itself. This is because, each car is unique in a way and choosing the best for your car needs best knowledge of your car as well.

However, after all this hectic business of choosing the right OBD-II scanner for you automobile and after you have installed the right one, then you can feel safe and sound throughout your drives with all risks taken care of.

  1. So far I really like BAFX OBD ii scanner on TOAD Windows OBD scanner software. It does exactly what you expect a consumer grade scanner to do, it reads and clears codes but also gives live data streams and logs. I gave it to a shop next to my office and so far those guys like the obd ii scanner also. It doesn’t read SRS, ABS or transmission codes that aren’t stored in the PCM though but most consumer grade OBDII scanners don’t either.

The function I was most impressed to see was the data logging feature and the ability to record and review logs. You can also print stored codes from the unit. I’ve tried this on several different cars already and so far it has worked flawlessly. It far out performs Actron and various other parts store obd scanners I have used.

My Snap on scanner requires a Subaru specific keychip in the plug and the BAFX OBD ii scanner had no issues connecting to. I compared to snapon obd scanner and they were identical so I have no problem relying on this to be accurate.

If you do home or even professional wrench turning I would highly recommend this obd ii scanner.

  2. Having your vehicle repaired or carefully checked in mechanic repair shops is more expensive than doing the checkup or repairs yourself via a OBD scanner. Not all car problems are severe enough that you’ve to deliver your vehicle to a garage, and the OBD II system cannot resolve all small problems (like electrical issues since that needs oscilloscope). Therefore, whether you know a little, or into troubleshooting vehicles as business, or you possess skills in repairing automobiles, owning an OBD 2 scanner can help you save money and time.

  3. What is a good but not expensive scanner for my Mazda 2 2005, built in 2005 release in Australia 2006 it has a 16pin plug port.
I have heard I need a JOBD scanner?

    • 2005 is OBD1+JOBD. Double incompatible with any public scanner. Only mechanic scanner will work. This free solution solution may work: ForScan (Google it, free Ford/Mazda obd software) + cheap ELM327 obd USB scanner on eBay.

  4. Obd ii scanner Seems to have worked. It informed me that my check engine came due to code “P0441”, which is a loose gas cap. I disabled the faulty code and purchased new gas cap for $9 from eBay. I thought about getting one of these obd scanner devices a few years ago but they were averaging $400. These have come way down in price. I wonder how much a car workship would charged just to revealed that a new gas cap was needed? This obd scanner device really gives power to the consumer.

  5. Not everyone has the wherewithal to try to fix their own vehicle or upgrade their performance. Recently, companies have tried to exploit OBD II for more mainstream applications in the form of “dongles” — devices that plug directly into the OBD II port and connect wirelessly.

OBD scanner Dongles are sometimes issued to customers by insurance companies as a way to achieve discounts. This generally involves using data pulled from the car’s OBD scanner connection to analyze driving habits and award a discount for low-risk behavior. Allstate’s Drivewise program, for example, looks at speed, how quickly the driver brakes, the number of miles driven, and when a person drives.

  6. Yep, got the right obd scanner from the recommended website and immediately diagnosed the fault code related to catalytic converter. The obd ii scanner I’m using is by Launch on eBay.

  7. I got it! These types of obd ii scanner devices are used by mechanics to interpret DTCs (Diagnostic Trouble Codes) from your vehicle. Now you can do this yourself, by simply plugging the device into your vehicle’s OBDII port, and streaming the information to an app on your mobile device or computer. At least this is what I figured after reading this article. So we can use these scanners to read car faults? Will it damage the vehicle?

  8. I was comparing many obd ii scanners available on amazon and ebay. Couldn’t make up mind. Glad this article showed up to make a helped objective obd ii scanner summary. It’s hard to buy as they all seem to have same features.

  9. Very pleased with this obd ii scanner purchase. Used toad-scan with elm327, along with android obd scanner app on my phone, on my 2017 Subaru to reset the speedometer after modifications. Thanks to this obd software, everything is right again and it saved me money from having to have the dealership adjust things. There are many other uses for this item and I am very happy with my purchase.

  10. From my husband who is an engineer: OBD scanner as described and is quite handy to have. Price was very good and arrived promptly. The unit has been tested on a 2007 Nissan Frontier and a 2013 Subaru Outback. Worked well with both, though it is apparent that older bus implementations slow display response. Nice to have on display error code descriptions and the ability to look up error codes if need be. So far so good. Will be testing on the kids various cars in the near future. Purchased by seeing his review page of obd scanners.

  11. Obd scanner arrived on time, helped me figure out what was wrong with my 2008 Tahoe. I looked up the code online and ordered the part to fix the problem with the check engine light. The part was about $19, easy fix. Would have cost a lot more at the shop.

  12. If you work on different cars frequently or are trying to troubleshoot problems other than the check engine light (MIL, which is actually easily fixable with a common $10 Amazon OBD scanner), you require a multiple system OBD scanner. These scanners not only can reset the check engine light but they can diagnose issues with the Anti-Lock Brakes, Airbag system, Transmission and Tire Pressure Monitoring components.

A full system OBD2 scanner will be able to read, clear and reset error codes on multiple systems and stream live data (by specifying what PID to stream inside a more advanced OBD II scanner), but they can not perform any coding or activate actuators like for example TOAD OBD scanner can.

A full system OBD2 scanner is the choice to go for if working on cars frequently. One trip to the dealer could save you enough money to buy one of these obd ii scanners. 🙂

Even if you haven’t used a full system OBD II scanner before don’t worry. They are simple enough to learn and function the same as the basic OBD II code readers. The main difference is that they can access another system on your car, not just the ECU.

  13. obd ii scanners indeed have worked in my case on 5 cars tested so far( Merc, BMW, Subaru, Ford, Audi). The obd reader used informed me that my check engine came due to code “P0456”, which is a loose gas cap. I turned off the error code and bought new gas cap for $9. I considered about purchasing one of these devices a few years ago but they were averaging $150. These have come way down in price. I wonder how much a pro shop mechanic would charged me just to tell to that I needed a new gas cap? The usefullness of obd scanners is clearly obvious to consumer who genuinely benefit from it, in real life sitaution.

  14. On-Board Diagnostics, or “OBD,” is a computer-based system built into all 1996 and later light-duty vehicles and trucks (in USA, different countries varies), as required by the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990.

OBD systems are designed to monitor the performance of some of an engine’s major components including those responsible for controlling emissions.

Hence OBD-II scanner is simply a tool that logs into this computer-based system. That’s the summary of it.

  15. Do you have to do any prior set up with your vehicle or can you just plug in obd ii scanner the first time and the obd scanner will read the codes?

    • The obd ii scanner is a Plug and play version scan tool which you can use it to test your cars directly once you got it. In the meanwhile, you can update the scan tool software and DTC library through a computer if you want to refresh the car models and year.

  16. The obd ii scanner “bafx obd2” works as intended and ultra easy to use easier to setup on Windows and use with any paid/free obd mobile, Mac, Win app.

Does everything I want and more. Really like the drive cycle checks for emissions testing.

  17. As an entry level mechanic, I purchased obd ii scanner as an upgrade to my entry-level obd scanner (that I purchased for $30) thinking that it would provide additional info and diagnostic. I was really exited about it’s internet capability but that excitement was doused when I found out that there was an associated subscription fee to access the site. I am pretty sure that I knew this before purchasing but was skeptical until I began going through the setup procedure

I found myself using my $40 Maxi Scan tool while the INNOVA 3100 sits atop of the cabinet. It is now my backup scan tool device waiting for the chance to reset the ABS system.

  18. Got the Actron CP9670 obd ii scanner. This obd scanner /Code Reader, is apparently new to the obd ii market. But it works like a charm! Obviously the features are designed with care. Troubleshoot and check your car for problems and troubles with the Check Engine Light, on. The obd ii scanner will find the cause of your car worry and help you get back on track with it.

Start making your Holiday this coming Dec. Don’t forget to put this obd scanner as one of it. 🙂 So when it comes to repairing your cars, they have the right diagnostic obd ii scanner tools to do it, right.

  19. If you are looking for an ELM compatible scanner, you might want to look elsewhere. Tried the ELM327 obd ii scanner, which is fully 1.3 compatible with some 1.4. Most of todays tools and software require 2.0 compatibility and this one does not have that. Outside of that, it does work with some software and provides accurate codes. However, when compared to other higher end 2.0 models I can say don’t rely too much on the real time data as it is off quite a bit on mine. I would not say that this one is any better than one of the less expensive knock offs. If you can get this one for a good price, then buy it, but at its’ regular price, I don’t think you are getting a better scanner than any of the other less expensive models out there. If you just want to view and reset codes, it is a great little scanner. That is all I have been using this for over the past year. If I need real time data, I reach for my OBDLink MX scanner. That scanner is accurate for real time, but cost quite a bit more and has not been any more accurate on the code retrieval or resetting of codes.

  20. Regarding my generic obdii scanner bought from TotalCarDiagnostics online store, it will obviously read trouble codes, but it also has built-in code library so when it finds a code it will display what that code represents (i.e. P0420 – Catalyst Efficiency Below Threshold Bank 1).

OBD II scanner also supports manufacturer specific MIL ‘check engine light’ codes, so if a particular code is detected you just specify the manufacturer of your vehicle and the reader will display what that manufacturer code is for.

Another noted item about the OBD scanner is the capturing of live (Mode 6) data. This kind of data is useful for fixing potential issues that may or may not cause a check engine light (mil). Things like RPM, Exhaust Gas Temperature, Oxygen Sensor voltages, etc and you can graph their output over time and observe their waveform for any discrepancies.

In summary: any car driver who wishes to save money/time in those critical moments, needs a handy obd scanner.

  21. Yeah, I totally agree your words, select the best scanners is based on your own car, I like Launch lines, last year i bought one, that’s works well still now.Not a Blutooth one, but easy to use. I am highly recommend it!

  22. I was looking for scanner obd for my merc 2014 and found this page. Despite trying a Autel based obd ii scanner, it didn’t work on my car unfortunately.

I bought this device to diagnose ABS light, but it didn’t work (not supported). Despite looking hard online for obd scanners for sale which ARE compatible. The vendor claimed that it would still diagnose engine light on my 2014 vehicle. I did test the obd ii scanner unit on a newer sons car and most functions seem to work!! I didn’t test any error codes as the other car didn’t have any. Seems obd scanners are also dependent on car compatability despite all cars have generic OBD2 standards.

    • I read bad reviews about not being able to perform some functions. READ what the tools capabilities are and for what years. The online advertisement clearly states the tool is best for 1996 and newer vehicles. So, this tool might not be the best for your vehicle. For my ‘05 E39 ,and “08 E53, it is absolutely PERFECT!

  23. Which obd scanner is the best? What’s the difference between obd ii scanner and obd-2? All these questions crossed my mind before getting one. Please explain anyone, a general guideline. Thanks.

  24. A OBD scanner can provide an inexpensive means of reading and clearing codes, and maybe even checking the status of the OBD II monitors, but that’s all.

To read sensor data, history codes, pending codes, etc., you need a “real” obd scanner, and the price jumps accordingly. An entry level scan tool with these features starts around $350 and goes up from there.

Most DIY obd scanners do not have bidirectional communications capability. This is done for liability reasons.

Most late-model vehicles have quite a few built-in self-checks that can be performed with a dealer or professional level scan tool, but running these tests requires some know-how, experience and caution.

For many situations, the advanced capabilities are not necessary, but when it is needed, there’s no substitute for having a professional-grade obd scanning potential.

  25. Good results finally. Got obd scanner. It identified the problem with my fuel pressure sensor and one quick part change later the car is as good as new. Saved the cost in one fix when compared to a dealer diagnostic and repair. Which obd scanner? Search on Amazon by including your car model. EG: GM obd scanner

  26. Despite many reviews on Amazon for many odbii scanner options, we find they’re unreliable as most are by DIY’ers, and not professional workshops dealing with hundreds of vehicles a month.

So we’re researching scanner obd choices which also work on hybrid cars, since electronic car customers are increasing also. The default scanner car procedure is to print out report of vehicle’s various parameter data.

However, what is lacking is what some actron obd scanners can do, which is graphical live monitoring. This is brilliant for car diognostic becoming easier and safer, since employees can detect car codes much faster.

  27. Having an obdii scanner, including obd software, I was skeptical if this scanner could read and clear some of the modules it claims.

Unfortunately for me my HPtuners obd ii scanner software and dongle cannot read SRS codes so I decided to give this a shot.

Overall I am happy with this obd ii unit, it’s easy to use and the touch screen is a plus for me.

  28. Wanting a laptop (Surface Pro, Windows 10) obd scanner package for evaluating OBD2 codes on a 1997 GMC Yukon and 2003 BMW X5 e53 4.4l

Your Q&A for TOAD diagnostics software suggests you don’t support GMC or Chevy (USA)?? Your list of compatible manufacturers has the GM emblem along with BMW.

Confused as to whether obd ii scanner can really read the engine and various parameters.

  29. Other options are:

    1) Decide On A Budget

These scantools can be costly, but you’ll also find more affordable options. For example, brands like Autel and Launch have budget-friendly scanners.

Since you can purchase these devices at many different price points, it’s a smart decision to decide budget before buying.

Having a budget in mind will help you to determine where you should focus your attention.

You’ll be able to look at choices that are in your budget and get a product that you’re happy with at a very reasonable price.

    2) Seek For OBD-II scanner With Extra Features, Besides Generic

OBviously you’ll want to ensure to get scanner that will help diagnose the vehicle, instead of leaving doubts, even after diagnosed.

However, there are several other things that you should look for as well. For example, some scanners can do other things, such as turning off the check engine light on your vehicle.

If your scanner offers numerous features, you’ll be able to get a lot more use out of it. If you’re trying to decide whether or not a scanner is worth the cost, it’s a good idea to look at some of the different features it has.

Choose a product with the features you’ll use. EG: DPF, Airbag, Radio.

  30. I just used a car diagnostic scanner for “Check Engine” light on. It indicated my O2 sensor was triggered.

I was able to erase the MIL fault and it hasn’t come back. The diagnostics scanner was difficult to clear the code as the engine had to be in run status but not running.

It couldn’t be done in Auxiliary mode. Took awhile to get the engine in that status as I had never done it in past. It does have a lot of features that I’m not familiar with. But a mechanic or car buff may understand it for sure.

Was my (BlueDriver OBD2) car diagnostic scanner worth it? Of course. Peace of mind.

  31. I was looking for credible obd11 scanner for my Mercedes car made in 2010. It started making misfire like noises, so needed a car scanner with live data.

After finding innova obd 11 car scanner, it’s a trust tool to have close by when a engine light goes on on your car.

Mostly after I get the trouble code I search the internet to assess the condition. It definitely gives cars owners piece of mind and definitely save money as you visit a mechanic knowing what the problem is on your vehicle. Fantastic obd2 scanner for sale (on Amazon).

  32. The market for an OBD scanner is like a wild west. There are dozens of brands available, but choosing one is tricky. The best choice may be to go with a well-established brand that offers good support. Cheap models might not work as well and may not even work at all. Here are some tips for choosing the right OBD scanner. Keep in mind that not all models are compatible with all car brands. A wireless scanner may work better than a wired one.

  33. The purpose of an OBD reader is to read out your vehicle’s trouble codes and provide you with an accurate diagnosis. Some readers can even identify faulty parts. These tools can save you hundreds, even thousands of dollars a year. The benefits of owning an OBD reader are many. Listed below are some of the top reasons to buy one. Having one at home is a great way to save money on car maintenance and repairs.

  34. are there any obd11 scanners or code readers that work on a car that won’t start

  35. OBD II Scanners communicate with your vehicle’s computer memory and establish a data transmission link. They typically require the VIN and some other information to connect to your car.

  36. I want to share some tips on figuring out what obd scanner do you need, or how to choose obd2 scanner for your vehicle.

When selecting an OBD2 scanner, consider factors like compatibility, features, and ease of use.

Make sure the scanner works with your car’s make, model, and year, and supports the functions you need, such as reading and clearing codes, live data, or I/M readiness.

For added convenience, some scanners have Bluetooth or Wi-Fi connectivity, allowing you to use them with smartphone apps. Don’t forget to read reviews and ask for recommendations to find the best fit for your needs.

    Happy scanning!
