Finding the Best Professional OBD2 Software For Laptop

Finding the Best Professional OBD2 Software For Laptop

One of the main problems that the internet has given to everyone is information overload. That’s right, there is just too much information overall. Don’t agree? Just look online for professional OBD2 software for laptop, and see how many listings you will receive.

You’ll find that you will end up with hundreds of thousands of sites to explore. Do you have time to look for each one?

Chances are that you are not going to be able to move forward with finding the right elements.

Information overload can cause a lot of different issues when you are trying to find the right information overall.

Everything that you search for online is going to bring about too many results. This is difficult to cycle through, especially if you’re looking for something specific. In regards to scanners, there’s a lot of different things to consider overall.

The following will help shine light on how to find the best professional software for a laptop. You’re going to find that there are a few elements that you need to consider as you move forward.

If you take time, you’ll find that there are a few things that will help you figure out which option is going to work best for your needs overall.

Before You Buy Anything

Before buying any software, make sure that you understand what OBD2 standards are and why they are in place right now.

Since 1970, the EPA has been leaning hard on car manufacturers to clean up their act. Well, that didn’t really come through until the 1990s, and now cars are made with high efficiency and without major smog problems.

That doesn’t mean that there are no smog issues at all, but they are minimal by comparison.

Well, with these standards have come with standardizations that most people didn’t have before.

In the past, mechanics would have to play a guessing game in order to figure out how to move forward. The guessing game would determine whether or not a fix was in fact the right one.

A mechanic could apply a fix, and the problem may still persist.

Well, with the EPA standard changes, there has been a change to how to diagnose and apply fixes to problems that a car can have. That’s a great thing.

The set of standards introduced by the EPA and the SAE in 1996 is now utilized with OBD.

Breaking Down The Right Solutions

If you have purchased an OBD scanner recently you may have outdated software. Outdated software is not going to do you any favors.

You will need to update things through the software’s website or you will need to look into getting something different from another area.

The scanner that you purchase will either have updates through their brand, or you will have to search for software that works with the scanner that you purchase.

To offset the search engine overload, there are a few things that you can take with you today to ensure that you are able to get moving forward.

Look For Compatibility First

Even though there are standards in place for diagnostic testing and software, you will still run into compatibility issues. With the release of certain tools, there is the release of certain software, and updates that are proprietary. This includes options from manufacturers that are meant to be for specific means.

You’re going to want to look into what option you have, and whether or not updates are free. Sometimes, options are going to cost you a great deal of money.

You have to do some research into the tools that you have, and the software that comes with it. If you do a little bit of research ahead of time, you will find that compatibility issues will no doubt be highlighted.

The right option will be highlighted based on the compatibility first.

Can Your Scanner Get Upgraded?

Here’s a tip that you can take with you if you haven’t purchased a scanner. When you are buying a scanner, look to see if you can update it. Some options are restricted in what you can do.

Some don’t have any extra storage, and some only let you have one OBD2 software solution.

You have to look into options that are going to help you upgrade when you want, including options for a laptop. If you invest in a scanner that you can’t upgrade, you’ll have to purchase a secondary option overall.

Reviews Tell The Tale

Thanks to the internet, people are putting out reviews about just anything. Look into the many reviews that are out there.

The reviews are going to be in several camps. There are some that are going to be raving about how great something is, and there are going to be options that are going to highlight what isn’t so good overall.

Whatever the case may be, make sure that you read through a broad section of what work sand what doesn’t. Look for positives, negatives, and things in between. If you have a full cycle of options, you’ll ensure that you are getting forward progress overall.

Do not buy or update any software without reading reviews about it.

This is a mistake that many people make, and it could prove to be problematic for a long time.

At the end of the day, you’re going to find that software updates are important. Before you buy anything, however, make sure that the scanner you want to purchase is going to help you get information that is up to date.

Without this, you will be stuck with a second rate scanner that you cannot update at all. PC-Windows-based auto scanners are powerful, but if there are no extra bells and whistles, you will not be able to get the right elements overall.

Take your time in the initial stages of purchasing scanners, so that you can update the software down the line.

Finding the best option takes time, so make sure that you are doing some due diligence before spending any money on options overall.

  1. Got the laptop software. Connected OBD2 cable to car and laptop and loaded up the OBD2 software on Windows 10. Literally found faults in 5 seconds and allowed me to fix the check engine light. Saved me fuel trip to mechanic, gave peace of mind and good to have as backup in future.

  2. Best thing ever. I just bought a 2011 BMW X5 – diesel. After 60 miles my check engine light came on and I took it back to the dealer.

The dealer cleared the fault code telling me it was a tail light error. After 60 miles the light came on again … returned car to dealer … the dealer said it was an AC error and it’s repaired.

Of course after another 60 miles the light came on again so I ordered both TOAD and ELM327 from this site that showed me the fault code was coming from the NOX sensor.

I cleared the fault code and drove another 60 miles and the light came on again.

I took the car to the dealer with the light on and told him it’s the NoX sensor.

The dealer said it’s not true because his computer shows him a fault code from a light inside the car and that I should expect check enginee light on all the time on BMW cars.

I connected ELM327 and my laptop and showed him that it’s better than his $4000 pro tool and I said that I will go to another BMW expert and get an official diagnose and I will sue him.

He said that he can’t change it in his shop so I have to go to another shop and he will pay the bill – $2100. After the sensor was changed my BMW works great and no more check engine lights on.

  3. I bought software from Toad and the ELM327. I have downloaded all the required drivers for software and for scan tool but still it’s un to communicate with the vehicles ecm. I don’t know where I’m making a mistake. Help please.

  4. There are now affordable obd-ii software tools, both PC based and stand alone, hand held diagnostic systems that can do pretty much all the car owner would need.

These start at less than $100 and can diagnose and aid repair on all car systems, reset service and code new parts, reset adaptions on a single manufacturer with an option to add more manufacturers.

The handheld diagnostic kit options for these type of tools are available from places like Vident and Foxwell.

The PC/laptop based options for this type of tool are available from places like totalcardiagnostics and Torque.

There are other single manufacturer tools also available for Fiat group vehicles from Multiecuscan and OBDteseter that are aimed at professional users but are still an affordable option for the serious Do it yourself car owner.

Just throwing some options for those interested in obd ii software or obd ii interface.
