A century of perfection in automobile creation starts with the story of Henry Royce who began a mechanical and electrical business in 1884 known as Royce Limited in Manchester, Britain.

Rolls-Royce Limited was eventually liquidated early in 1971 and a new company, Rolls-Royce Motors Limited incorporated April of the same year with the sole function of developing petrol and diesel engines, motor cars, coachwork and other products formerly produced by the company.
In 1980 the company was privatised and ownership changed hands from the British government to Vickers Limited. Following a survey in 1987 that showed Rolls-Royce as the most popular product brand after Coca-Cola, the BMW Group bought the company from Vickers.
