Hashimoto Yujiro was born in 1875 in Okazaki City, Japan. He was a bright young man who was enthusiastic about business, engineering and mechanics.

He pursued a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering at Tokyo Engineering School and graduated in 1895.

Immediately after graduating, Hashimoto delved into the world of engineering and worked in various companies as an engineer before creating his own self-defence autonomous vehicle manufacturing company known as Kaishinsha Motor Car Works in July 1911.

Together with his business investors Kenjiro Den, Rokuro Aoyama and Meitaro Takeuchi, the company produced its first car, the DAT, in 1914.

The name of the car was derived from the initials of the last names of the three investors.

By 1925, the company was now known as DAT Jidosha & Company Limited and was the largest vehicle manufacturer in Japan.

In the same year, DAT Jidosha Seizo merged with a local foundry company and was renamed to Tobata Casting.

In another corner of Japan, Yoshisuke Aikawa was born in the late 1880 in Yamaguchi city. Coming from an affluent family, Aikawa received formal education and attained a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from the Tokyo Imperial University in 1903.

On completion of his education, he moved to the USA to pursue further studies on malleable cast iron technology, a craft he was later to bring back home to Japan. With the support of affluent politicians, Aikawa founded the Tobata Foundry in 1909.

His continued growth and success led him to take over presidency of the Kuhara Mining Company in 1928.

Aikawa created Nippon Sangyo (shortened to Nissan), a holding company which he used to acquire small and medium affluent businesses in Japan.

By the end of 1931, Nissan had over 130 subsidiary companies under its umbrella, one of these companies was Tobata Casting.

The year 1933 marks the meeting of two great innovators, Hashimoto Yujiro and Yoshisuke Aikawa, and the creation of a top of the range vehicle manufacturer.

Following this merger, Aikawa took great interest in the automobiles division of the Tobata Casting and dedicated more resources and time to the division.

He incorporated the division as a new subsidiary under his conglomerate and named it Nissan Motors in 1934.

One of the company’s first successful passenger cars was DATSON type 11 manufactured in 1933, it was later renamed to DATSUN.

The car became very popular locally and made tremendous sales. By 1935, the models were being sold to South and Central America and Asia.

Over the years, Nissan Motors has played very important roles in shaping the automotive industry to what it is today.

As the 6th largest automobile manufacturer in the world, Nissan has grown through different business collaborations and mergers.

Some of the notable business mergers include Prince Motor Company (1966), Renault (1999), DongFeng Motor Group (2003), Daimler AG (2010), Alliance Rostec Auto BV (2012) and Mitsubishi Motors (2016).

The company grew exponentially and spread all around the world with new manufacturing and assembly plants springing up in several countries including; Nissan Motor Corporation U.S.A. (1960), Nissan Mexicana (1960), Nissan Motor Manufacturing (UK) Ltd (1986), Brazil (2001) and Nissan Motor India Pvt. Ltd (2005).

Today, Renault is the largest shareholder of Nissan Motors with a 43.4% stake in the company.

Common Nissan Problems

  1. Transmission Faults

There is a widespread defect amongst Nissan Pathfinder models built between 2005 and 2007 that causes coolant to leak into the vehicle’s transmission system.

This fault leads to failures in transmission which may cause the vehicle to lose power or even damage the engine.

If unchecked, this is an expensive defect that may require an entire overhaul of the engine. The cause for this problem is unknown.

The service repair and maintenance manual recommends that vehicle owners visit the nearest Nissan dealer and have the transmission system checked for fault. If found faulty, the transmission and radiator should be repaired or replaced, whichever is appropriate.

  1. Unstable/Rough/Jerking Transmission

Owing to poor vehicle designs in the 2013 Nissan Altima, it has been noted that the vehicle severely shakes or vibrates and may sometimes cause the transmission to totally fail.

This may cause the vehicle to stall mid-traffic and put the occupants in immediate danger of an accident.

The related problems to this fault outweigh the solutions and therefore, vehicle owners are advised to consult their local dealer in the event of a transmission failure.

The vehicle might need to have the whole transmission system repaired or replaced, as appropriate.

  1. Air Conditioning Failure

The air conditioning/heater system in Nissan Xtrail and Altima models has been noted to intermittently stop functioning.

The system does not cool or heat the vehicle cabin as required. This is mostly an annoyance and has not been seen to have any direct effect on the mechanical operation of the vehicles.

Vehicle owners are advised to visit a qualified repair and maintenance professional to have the systems cleaned and/or replaced.

  1. Clutch Fault

In 4×4 models of the Nissan brand, the clutch is reported to fail after exceeding 90,000 miles. This is risky as it may lead to a car crash.

The problem is related to wear and tear and mainly experienced in long-term use vehicles. Vehicle owners should inspect the vehicle clutch set periodically and replace burnt parts.

  1. Steering Wheel Lock Problems

Due to a faulty electrical connection on the steering wheel of Nissan Altima 2008 and 2009 models, the wheel automatically locks preventing the driver from physically rotating it.

This is a fault with the ESCL (Electronic Steering Column Lock) that can be potentially dangerous if in an emergency situation.

Vehicle owners are advised to replace steering wheel column or the steering lock control unit after inspection by a qualified technician.

Being one of the highest manufactured vehicles in the world, the Nissan stands out as a user friendly car to own owing to the availability and easy access to spare parts and knowledgeable technicians.
