Volkswagen is a German brand known worldwide. The automobile manufacturing company was founded in 1937 by the German Labor Front.

It was initiated under the reign of Adolf Hitler and he took part in approving the people’s car design presented by Ferdinand Porsche, which is what is referred to as Volkswagen.

The factory plant for the Volkswagen production was constructed in 1938 and a year later when the war began, not many cars had been produced nor delivered.

During the war, the Volkswagen Factory plant was used in making military vehicles, including the SUV-like model Kubelwagen and amphibious schwimmwagen.

The captured prisoners from the war were made to work at the plant in the repairs department. In 1945, KDF-Stadt was bombed and captured by the British.

The ruined factory plants were given to British Army Officer, Major Ivan Hirst.

The aim was to make use of it for military car maintenance and then dismantle it before being shipped to Britain.

However, there was one war vehicle left behind in the factory, the “KDF-Wagen;” which Hirst repainted green in color to reveal it to the British.

The British Army ordered 20,000 automobiles, as they were short of cars and it prompted Hirst and his assistant, Heinrich Nordhoff, to take the initiative to restart car production.

After the military government was finished in 1949, Nordhoff continued to manage the Volkswagen factory plant.

In the same year, the Volkswagen Type 1 beetle was exhibited and sold in the US. In 1952, Canadian Motors imported 12 Volkswagen vehicles.

Volkswagen America was formed in 1955 to regulate the sales and service there, thus increasing the sales of the Type 1 Beetle. In 1959, Volkswagen opened a production plant in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

The company was slowly expanding and gaining fame across different countries. Volkswagen also made a limited version of the Beetle and campaigned at the Baja 1000 Mexican races (1967-1971).

Volkswagen did some adjustments to the 1961 Type 1 Beetle to enhance its components and performance. VW’s expanded their production line with new Type 3 models of Karmann Ghia Notchback, Fastback and Variant.

In 1969, 2 larger Type 4 i.e. the 411 and 412 makes were presented. VW also added a super beetle model in 1971.

Other Volkswagen makes of the 70’s included the military themed Types 181 (1973), Volkswagen Passat (1973), Siccorocco (1974), and Volkswagen Polo (1975).

These four models had plenty of common features and they had a close resemblance to other car brand models that inspired their design.

In 1980, sales in the USA and Canada fell drastically despite having selling models, such as the Golf.

The second generation Golf, Jetta and GTI made things better as the sales were slightly driven higher.

However, the sales once again dropped in 1985 and the VW Pennsylvania production closed in 1988.

Volkswagen also completed the buying of SEAT, which was a Spanish car manufacturer in 1990.

The 90s saw Volkswagen updating their earlier models with few introductions, such as the J-Mays-design concept car. They also introduced a new Beetle car and the Lupo in 1998.
