Interesting Facts About Daihatsu You Probably Don’t Know – Common Problems – and PDF Manuals for Download…

Daihatsu or Daihatsu Motor Company Limited is a Japanese Auto company. It is amongst those few manufacturers of Japanese Internal Combustion Engine that have been serving the generations for over a century.

As the company progressed, it made its own vehicles and became famous for its off-road vehicles as well as a range of smaller vehicles, including micro-vans, passenger cars, and pickup trucks.

The company has seen many good and bad times and at present, Daihatsu is a subsidiary (wholly owned) of Toyota. Toyota Motor Corporation acquired it in August 2016.

Daihatsu did not exist before 1951 and it was the result of major structural changes in Hatsudoki Seize Company Limited which was founded in 1907.

In that restructure, Daihatsu came up as a successor to Hatsudoki. Hatsudoki’s focus was majorly on making Japanese National Railways’ steam engines. After that, the company focused on railroad diesel engines and later it started manufacturing automobiles.

Daihatsu’s products were first exported to Europe in 1960s, but the company didn’t succeed in recording any major sales until the 1980s.

In 1967, Toyota took off the tag from Daihatsu as an independent automaker and became a major shareholder in the company.

Toyota continued increasing its shareholding in Daihatsu and in 1995, Toyota’s share was 33.4 percent. At that time, Toyota and Daihatsu were in a contract to produce some small cars and mini-vehicles.

Toyota continued purchasing shares from the major stakeholders and financial institutions and increased its holding in Daihatsu to 51.2 percent in 1998.

By gaining the major share in Daihatsu, Toyota gained the power to manipulate resolutions in the annual general meetings. Then, financial crisis led the sales of Daihatsu vehicles go down in Europe and other parts of the world.

The sales fell from 58,000 units in 2007 to just 12,000 units in 2011. In 2011, Daihatsu decided to shut down its business in Europe by the year 2013 and showed the reason that strong yen was hurting its export business. Finally, in August 2016, Toyota acquired Daihatsu and now it is a wholly owned subsidiary of TMC (Toyota Motor Corporation).

The company made its global presence in the early 1950s and by the year 1980, around 500,000 vehicles of Daihatsu were circulating in different parts of the world. It was late 1990s when exporting of the cars began reducing.

The reason for reduced export was selling the technology to Malaysian company Perodua and Toyota also became a major shareholder of the company. The falling trend of sales in major parts of the world continued and Toyota in 2006, ended Daihatsu’s 40-year-old business in Australia.

Similarly, because of low sales, Daihatsu either limited its presence or pulled out from all its major markets, like New Zealand, Europe, Chile, South Africa, etc.

Daihatsu was majorly involved in developing programs for electric vehicles and the first result was seen in 1970 at Osaka World Expo in the form of “pavilion cars”. After that, the company started producing vehicles primed for institutional use, such as golf carts and DBC-1.

Over time, the company developed many electric motors with advanced technology mainly seen in Hybrid vehicles.

Common Daihatsu Problems

Daihatsu is a brand that makes use of Japanese technology and so there are less chances to get major problems.

Here some problems have been outlined that are commonly faced by Daihatsu users and may also emerge in your vehicle. Knowing them is important so that if you ever face any such issues, you can find a solution to these problems.

  1. Exhaust System: In some models of Daihatsu Charade, problems related to exhaust may occur. You may hear loud roaring noise from the exhaust of your Charade while driving. This is the clear indication of a failing exhaust and to solve the problem, you should replace the faulty exhaust or go through the repair manual.
  2. Rusty Brake Pipes: In the Daihatsu Charade model, brake pipes cause problems and sometimes they even fail to work. If you have ever noticed any type of fluid leaking underneath your car, it might be from brake pipes. You yourself can check underneath of the car, the brake pipes and metal pipes near fuel tank.
If you find them rusty, replace them. Similarly, brake pipes should also be replaced and after the replacement is fitted, you should top up the brake fluid.
  3. ABS Warning Light: Sometimes ABS warning light may appear on the dashboard. Usually, the reason might be a broken ABS reluctor ring. If this problem is not solved in time, the harm to your vehicle may increase and the broken ring may further damage the ABS sensor.
You should get your vehicle diagnosed and find out which wheel has the faulty ring. There are chances of ring being replaced and if the sensor is damaged, it will also need replacement.
  4. Engine Management Warning Light: You may sometimes see the engine management warning light appearing on the dashboard. If any such light appears on the dashboard of your Daihatsu vehicle, then the reason for this might be a faulty oxygen sensor.
With the failure of this part, your car will start consuming more fuel. To fix the problem, get the faulty oxygen sensor replaced with the help of your repair manual.
  5. Corrosion: In some models of Daihatsu Sirion, corrosion problems may occur under the sills and wheel arc. Check if rubbing it will solve the problem or if the part is too damaged, get it replaced.
  6. Gear Changing: Some vehicles of Daihatsu may have gear changing issues. You may find it difficult to change the gears, the reasons might be two: firstly, clutch would require to be adjusted slightly and secondly gearbox oil needs to be changed.
Identify the problem and perform the appropriate tasks.
  7. Suspension: In the model Sirion, the suspension may produce some knocking noise, especially on bumps and while overdriving. The cause may be failure of lower suspension arms and it may need to be replaced.

The above discussed issues do not occur in every vehicle and not even in new vehicles. When you are served for several years by the vehicle, some of these issues may occur and that too not in every vehicle.

To remain stress-free, you should regularly look for all the above issues.
