OBD-2 never become an official government-enforced requirement in South Africa. Meaning some cars are still OBD-1, and some are OBD-2. Depends on the manufacturer. Good way to find out is to look at the Vehicle Identification sticker under your hood. We noticed that 90% of our South African customers have no problem using TOAD — and their car is OBD-2 compatible. Meaning all you need is TOAD and ELM327 to start diagnosing your car. If you're still not sure, there's no other way to find out, except to purchase ELM327. Connect it to your laptop and car, load up the software it comes with, and you'll find out if your car is OBD-2 compatible. My Car is not OBD-2! What now? First see if you can find your vehicle in this OBD-1 list. If it's there, then TOAD will support your vehicle using ALDL cable. If you can't find it in OBD-1 list, then we recommend you get this little beast — AutoBoss V30 scan tool.

In all other countries, you will need to verify that your vehicle is OBD-II compliant by looking under the hood for a sticker indicating compliance. Otherwise, submit a support ticket to us and we'll tell you (let us know your EXACT car/model/year).
