Saab Automotive Repair Manuals

Interesting Facts About Saab You Probably Don’t Know – Common Problems – and PDF Manuals for Download…

Saab automobile has produced some of the simplest and finest cars in the world. Although they might not be as popular as brands like Toyota and Volkswagen, the Saab brand has paid its dues when it comes to providing high quality cars designed with state-of-the-art technology.

Saab was funded in Sweden and began business in 1945. Initially, the company started manufacturing small automobiles before they ventured into other aspects of automobile making.

In 1968, it collaborated and merged with Scania-Vabis to produce Saab 900, one of the earliest models of the brand. Later in the 1980s the company introduced its Saab 9000 series, which became widely known around that time.

Saab’s parent company was involved in the manufacturing of military aircraft during the First World War. However, the company decided to delve into the manufacturing of automobiles to meet the needs of the increasing population in demand for automobiles.

However, General Motors saw the great ideas being harnessed in the company and decided to buy 50% of the firm’s ownership with an investment of about US$600 million.

This boosted the overall production capacity of the company, and by 2000 well known models like Saab 9-5 and Saab 9-3 were introduced into the market.

In 2000, GM completely owned the brand as the brand became a subsidiary of General Motors.  But currently, ownership of Saab Automobile has now changed hands.

A Dutch automobile car manufacturer, Spyker Cars, became the sole owner of Saab Automobiles after buying the entire ownership rights from GM.

Presently, there is ongoing research on ways to harness the technological resources of Saab to manufacture electric cars. If their plan goes accordingly, we may see some electric car models designed and manufactured by the foremost Saab automobile brand.

Interestingly, there are plans to continue the Saab 9-5 and Saab 9-3 models once the company resumes manufacturing and operations.

In 2012, the Swedish National Electric Vehicle in conjunction with a Chinese company bought back Saab Automobiles and they have already started manufacturing new model cars.   The Saab 9-3 Turbo has been reintroduced into the market also.

There is currently research going on to produce electrically powered vehicles in the company, although they are not going to entirely discontinue the production of petrol powered ones.

This decision to move into the electric car market was a result of the present clamor for green technology where pollution will be reduced to the barest minimum.

With the high-tech gadgets and a consortium of engineering experts at the company’s disposal, there is no doubt that Saab is capable of competing favorably with other top level car manufacturers.

However, Saab will not achieve this alone. After gaining experience from their previous foray into the automotive market, the company has decided to partner with various part suppliers to make sure their models are of the highest standards.

It remains to be seen how Saab intends to create a competitive edge in the market after been absent for a very long time.

Common Problems of Saab and solutions

Just like other types of automobiles, Saab brand of cars can develop faults, especially when the car has covered a respectable length of distance after purchase.

After covering about 50,000 miles, you might start noticing some minor problems in the car. But these issues can properly be fixed when the user refers to the repair manual.

The following are some common problems associated with Saab automobiles.

  • Fuel Gauge reads empty

This problem is usually common with Saab 9-3 model. In this case, the fuel gauge can suddenly go down to zero when driving. This might not have any effect on the drivability of the car, but it can be a little bit annoying.

The main reason for this is that the fuel gauge sensor has become faulty, which results in a lost signal.  To solve this problem, you need to change the fuel pump unit.

The sensor is built inside the fuel pump, so changing the fuel pump will definitely solve the problem.

  • Car Surging and rough idle

Car surging occurs in nearly in all types of cars. The most basic cause of this problem is a defective electronic throttle body.

If you encounter a rough idle, clean the throttle body and place it back. When placing it back, you may need to calibrate the throttle body using a Tech-1/2 scan tool.

  • Dash board making some clicking noise

If you are noticing a clicking sound in the dashboard area, the most basic explanation is missing teeth in the recirculation flap motor.

Your HVAC system is controlled by a series of motor. If one of the motor teeth falls off, you might experience this noise when riding.

The solution here is to loosen the assembly and see if there is any lose area or missing teeth in the motor. If you can’t find any lose item there, you just have to replace the assembly with a new one. That should definitely solve the problem.

  • Steering Lock Malfunction

The ignition switch module can malfunction, which might temporarily disable the steering lock module. It’s quite easy to fix this as there are a good number of these switches available for replacement. It’s also easy to replace without calling a technician.

  • Unpleasant squeaking suspension

If you are trying to turn your steering wheels and notice a grinding noise from your suspension, it could be that the bearings and top mounts are won out.

The parts are relatively affordable and they can be easily taken out and replaced.  But if you have used the car for more than 100,000 kilometers, it’ll be wise to completely replace the strut assembly; as the bushings, springs, and struts might also be worn out.

Conclusion

Saab Automobiles are definitely a good choice for those looking for simple, durable, and effective cars for their relative comfort and transportation needs. Just like every other car brands, the Saab brand has its own issues.
