Rolls-Royce Automotive Repair Manuals

Interesting Facts About Rolls-Royce You Probably Don’t Know – Common Problems – and PDF Manuals for Download…

A century of perfection in automobile creation starts with the story of Henry Royce who began a mechanical and electrical business in 1884 known as Royce Limited in Manchester, Britain.

After creating his first vehicle, the ‘Royce 10’, in 1904 he met the innovative Charles Rolls who ran a successful car dealership in Fulham known as C.S.Rolls & Company.

After entering an agreement, Rolls agreed to exclusively sell all the cars that Royce could produce and they would be unveiled as Rolls-Royce brands.

Owing to their budding partnership, the pair formed the Rolls-Royce Limited company in 1906 and invested in a new premise for the manufacture of additional vehicles.

By 1908 the company went public and listed 100,000 new shares for trading to help increase the capital input for their improved business.

The company started a new path to greatness by concentrating on the newer, bigger and more robust model, ‘40/50’.

This model performed so well in the market that it was later to be used by the British government as a blue print for developing armoured vehicles that served in both the First and Second World Wars.

As the popularity of Rolls-Royce engines grew so did the business and in 1921 the company broke its borders and established the first international manufacturing factory in Springfield, Massachusetts, USA.

This move saw the company grow exponentially and increase revenue dramatically so much so that it made a much needed impact on the post-war British government policy that allowed manufacturers to only produce one car model.

Production went through the roof and competition was rife amongst automobile manufacturers in Britain.

At the onset of the Great Depression in the late 1920s and early 1930s, rival companies that were not able to stay afloat, like Bentley, were acquired by the now large car manufacturer.

This addition of racing/sports cars to Rolls-Royce’s portfolio proved to be another great milestone in their growth.

Since Bentley had already created a good market niche for their product, it was relatively easy for Rolls-Royce to marry the two brands and create top rated automobiles that were and continue to be appreciated all across the world.

After the death of Henry Royce in 1933 business continued to boom with Rolls-Royce entering into the field of aero-engine design and manufacture.

Unfortunately, in 1971, Rolls-Royce was put under receivership owing to financial problems arising in the company.

Under the government’s control, the company continued to develop marine, aero and industrial engines to boost the national defence’s fleet.

Rolls-Royce Limited was eventually liquidated early in 1971 and a new company, Rolls-Royce Motors Limited incorporated April of the same year with the sole function of developing petrol and diesel engines, motor cars, coachwork and other products formerly produced by the company.

In 1980 the company was privatised and ownership changed hands from the British government to Vickers Limited. Following a survey in 1987 that showed Rolls-Royce as the most popular product brand after Coca-Cola, the BMW Group bought the company from Vickers.

Common Rolls-Royce Problems

Like any motor vehicle on the road today, the Rolls-Royce brand has been faced with its fair share of technical, mechanical and electrical problems.

Regardless of its notable reputation that has seen it rank highly in most motor vehicle comparisons, the Rolls-Royce brand is still vulnerable to some faults as analysed below.

  1. Engine Cooling System Failure

The 2011 Ghost series was installed with turbocharged engines that require an auxiliary water pump to keep it cool.

The water pump is controlled by way of a circuit board which was noted to overheat and malfunction in some vehicles.

This failure of the cooling system could cause the pump to smoulder and essentially cause part of or the whole engine to catch fire.

In such cases where fault is suspected, vehicle owners are required to replace the auxiliary water pump system immediately.

  1. Airbag Malfunction

At least one Rolls-Royce vehicle was recalled in 2015 owing to inadequate thorax air bags that fail to shield the front seat passenger appropriately in the event of an accident.

This malfunction may cause serious injury or even death to the occupant. The service repair manual recommends that maintenance professionals should replace the offensive airbag modules immediately.

  1. Faulty Exhaust Emission System

It would be very unusual to be driving down the road and all of a sudden have the driver cabin filled with exhaust fumes. This is the case for some Rolls-Royce passenger vehicles which have been reported to have faulty evaporative emission control systems.

These exhaust fumes are combustible and as such, accumulation in a closed space like the driver cabin could lead to instant combustion if any ignition source is activated.

Rolls-Royce dealers are advised to add on to the leak detection filter a plated mild steel extension pipe that will redirect any leaked exhaust vapours to the exterior of the car.

  1. Faulty Brake Indicator Light

When a Rolls-Royce car is switched on, the two brake indicator lights should automatically light up. Similarly, if the brake pedal is engaged, the brake lights should illuminate.

However, due to poor maintenance, rugged terrain or electrical faults, these lights may fail to turn on.

Vehicle owners should visit a professional and have the light tested to see if they are connected and viable or if there is a problem with the lights control system.

If any fault is found, the offensive part should be fixed or replaced immediately.

  1. Worn Out Bushes and Mounts

It is important to note that Rolls-Royce cars are generally heavier than their counterparts in the market.

Because of this, the front end bushings and compliance mounts tend to get worn out very fast. This can be easily detected by the clunks and rumbles heard in the front end of the vehicle.

Vehicle owners should check the status of and replace any worn out bushings and mounts regularly.

Conclusion

Owning an extravagant car like the Rolls-Royce is admirable but it needs proper care and maintenance for it to give the recommended service.

Having an updated service and repair manual at hand and a professional service crew is a necessary investment.
