Pontiac brand is a subsidiary of the famous automobile manufacturer General Motors. This brand was GM’s companion established for Oakland automobiles, which belonged to a more expensive range.

Pontiac gained popularity and soon it surpassed Oakland, ousting the parent brand completely by 1933. GM sold it in the markets of the United States, Mexico and Canada.

Because of the late 2000’s financial crisis and failed restructuring efforts, GM in 2008 announced that the manufacturing of cars of Pontiac will be discontinued and the marketing of these vehicles will be stopped by the end of 2010.

GM followed the same way as it did with Oldsmobile in 2004. Following this, the company manufactured the last batch of Pontiac vehicles in December 2009 and one final vehicle was manufactured in January 2010.

The Franchise agreements with the dealers of Pontiac cars expired in October 2010.

In 1926, General Motors introduced Pontiac brand as its Companion Make program for GM’s Oakland automobiles and shared the GM A platform.

The car achieved success earlier and within months, Pontiac ousted the Oakland. The style and body of Pontiac cars were that of a Sedan with the options of 2 and 4 doors. The famous models were Landau Coupe, sport Landau Sedan, Sport Roadster, Sport Phaeton and Sport Cabriolet.

The sales amount of Pontiac cars was rising and that of Oakland was declining, making the Pontiac brand to be the only companion marque of GM. Finally, the production of Oakland seized in 1932.

Pontiac’s were also manufactured at the Japanese factory of GM from knock-down kits. This didn’t last long and the manufacturing that started in 1927 ended in 1941.

The models that Pontiac launched in 1946-1948 were the 1942 models only with little changes. In 1948, Hydra-matic automatic transmission was introduced that helped increase the sales of Pontiac cars, which were becoming outdated, such as Streamliners and Torpedoes.

The new Pontiac model came in 1949 that was much stylish because of low body lines and back fenders. The cars launched in 1955 had new chassis and bodies and they also had a new 173 HP overhead valve V8 engine which resulted in the sales of Pontiac cars.

When this new engine was introduced, the old one with 6-cylinder was discontinued. In 1961, its Tempest model line had a 4-cylinder engine and the 6-cylinder engine returned in 1966 with Firebird.

This engine was the first of its kind in the USA that utilized overhead-camshaft configuration.

The models launched in the 1960s and 1970s were similarly styled like other makes of GM. However, only Cadillac was different. The powerful engines of 1960s were restricted by the over increasing cost of fuels and insurance.

Moreover, Federal emission and safety regulations was also responsible for the restriction. In 1982, Pontiac brand came up with the wedge-shaped Firebird which was an instant success and provided Pontiac a foundation to build more performance oriented models in next decade.

A complete revamping of Pontiac brand was seen in the 2000 decade. G6 replaced Grand Am, the production of Bonneville stopped after almost 50 years and many more such episodes of restructuring happened.

After the financial crisis of 2008, GM decided to retire the brand and many jobs along with dealerships were cut. In late 2009, the last batch of Pontiac was produced and in the year 2010, GM was done with all the agreements of franchise.
