7 Best OBD2 Software in 2023 and Beyond: Reviewed and Tested

Purpose of this article is to save you time researching reliable professional OBD software for your PC/laptop/mobile. Because competing automotive scan tools have saturated the market for sake of profit, this trend has shifted focus away from features.

For this reason, we’ve felt compelled to bring light to established innovators of diagnostics solutions. Each company mentioned below has a long track record of OBD2 expertise.

For example, a standard car driver will neglect subtle, yet important differences in two OBD reader kits. Because both are independently convincing.

Although our years of vehicle workshop experience easily identifies a “me-too” check-engine-light reader  – from OBD-2 software approved by savvy automotive technicians. This article focuses on later.

Meaning we won’t focus on mobile apps, but on laptop software. Frankly, we’re not fond of Android/iOS apps because (1) many get abandoned due to competition of new on-board-diagnostics apps, and (2) they’re not built by car companies, but mostly freelancers.

For instance, OBD-II related software for PC has been around since early 1990’s. While OBD mobile apps came only recently.

What consumers don’t know is, most popular smartphone OBD2 applications have stripped-down functionality. They tend to compensate with fancy GUI. For this very reason, we approve PC-only.

And having used and tested various car software for over 10 years — we present 7 worthy OBD2 diagnostic software packages…

Last judgement is on your intelligence. We advise to visit their website, get a sense of trustworthiness. And purchase one that suits your unique car needs.

Also for reasons of saving your reading-time, we’ve kept all reviews, in bullet points.

Rule of thumb: All OBD2 software basically performs the SAME. They diagnose and return vehicles faults to the user. Some diagnose more fault codes, some less. Quantity of errors detected is most prominent difference.

OBD-2 do-it-yourself diagnostics puts owner in equal position to mechanic. However malfunctions or broken parts should still be repaired and not just dismissed with a simple “Clear fault” button within the Windows/Mac software.

What all listed OBD Car Scanner Software Share in Common:

  • These are not free OBD software. For free OBD2 software (for ELM327 scan tool), download EasyOBD. It’s the best “free” you’ll find anywhere.
  • Automotive industry generally only targets Windows check-engine-light-obd2-scanner-for-windows. There’s luckily two decent OBD2 software for MAC check-engine-light-obd2-scanner-for-macos we found and reviewed them below.
  • All reviews are based on totality of our technical and car mechanical expertise with combined experience of 60 years. We attempted to examine, critique and judge them in a unbiased manner.
  • All software supports ELM327 OBD2 Bluetooth, WIFI and USB interface. You can find ELM327 install instructions here.
  • None of these software are bidirectional. For bidirectional, you’ll need high-end OEM scan tool (which are usually in $1000+ range). Also you can search on our blog for “obd2 scanner” for other detailed reports of high-end workshop grade OBD2 scanners or code readers.

Brief intro guide about Scanners / Code readers / General diagnostic tools:

Automotive engineering has come a long way since Karl Benz developed the first petrol or gasoline power automobile in 1885. What started off a form of transportation to solely move people from point A to point B has not turn into a luxurious, fast option to transport people from A to B.

Before the technological boom, cars were plain and simple and easy to fix. However, as we have advanced in all aspects, cars now are equipped with the most technological items that one can think of, from air conditioner, to navigation, to even autopilot.

With the technological advancement, automobiles are becoming increasingly smarter. Today’s cars can collect information navigating the best route available, to adjusting the fluids in the car to fit the driving condition, to lastly, detecting errors in the engine.

Most automobiles you on the road today all have an on-board diagnostics, or an OBD2 port which provides access to all the data from the engine control unit (ECU). With the data, a technician can determine the car’s problems and see if maintenance is required.

obd-port-softwareStep 1: Connect ELM327 to your car’s OBD port.
Step 2: Install ELM327 drivers.
Step 3: Launch OBD2 software, and click “Connect”. It’s that easy!

To access the information from the ECU (Electronic-Control-Unit), one needs a computer and software to plug the port and gain access. Because of this trend, more and more automotive companies are now developing OBD software for laptop/mobile…. which can cater to the end-users and assist them in accessing the car’s ECU data.

Usually, the product will come with two pieces of equipment, a device, car scanning hardware (cord) and car OBD-2 software (for accessing data via OBD port). The hardware/cord connects the ECU to the computer.

The (PC/laptop/Android/Max/iOS) OBD software then reads the data and analyze the data for the end-users. The main goal of this application is to assist with the maintenance of the vehicle as well as prolonging the life of the vehicle.

Below, we have gathered seven different types of car diagnostic software from seven different companies which we believe are the best software that you can purchase now for your Windows/Mac laptop/PC computer.

  1. Hi. Just place an order for TOAD. Thanks for the review. Appreciate much the brief and straightnto the point review. Keep up tge good work.

  2. Thanks for the numbers. I have owed a light and medium duty truck repair company for over 22 years. We use many different scanners in our arsenal for trouble shooting, most are bi-directional. So, I was not overly impressed with TOAD obd software on my laptop, but it will serve the purpose that I purchased it for (accurate obd 2 scans). Mostly ?for laptop ability and large screen display when test driving. So it alone was worth the money.

I too am an information junky. The information you provide at your website is OUTSTANDING. Very good information! That alone is worth what you charge for the package deal.

I look forward to purchasing some more of your products in the future for remapping, tuning, flashing and reprograming. I am always interest in any Mode$06 Information from any obdii software, especially on Fords.

We also work on a vast amount of light duty diesel engines, Ford (Power Strokes) G.M. (Duramax), Dodge (Cummings) and International (466 etc.). If you have more information on these motors, feel free to shoot me an email for what you have to offer. My two Diesel Techs are both very knowledgeable, but I like to be on top of my game at all times. We also work on gas engines, Ford, G.M. & Dodge.

Anyway wanted to show my gratitude for TotalCarDiagnostics and offering these objective non-biased reviews of various obd 2 software.

  3. Over the last couple years TOAD has done more then one could ask for for the price. I’ve diagnosed and repaired misfires, missing sensors, etc and have even used this to “dial in” my custom intake on BMW. I purchased a “CAI” and using this quickly found it was an extremely hot air intake which took the car within 7 degrees of safety shutdown in which I built my own afterwords.

  4. EOBD Facile does exactly what it says in the description. Used in conjuction with Total Car Diagnostics ELM327 wifi. Works fine on my skoda octavia. Detected engine management fault and allow me to clear the MIL successfully. Real time displays and 0-60 functions work perfectly. Very pleased.

  5. TOAD-OBD software is simply a brilliant idea! Other then that, I’m sadly having issues staying connected to my ODB devices in my car – I thinking my ODB port is faulty. One annoyance I can think of is redoing the profiles if you are changing devices, any chance of allowing profiles to be backed up to the users google drive and then restored if they uninstall or have a new device?

  6. Was looking for OBD2 scanner for PC. Tried PCMScan but it’s not updated often, even though it’s respectively high end obd2 reader software. Settled on AutoEnginuity mainly because they support OEM parameters for Asian cars, while other obd ii laptop software only supports generic engine and transmission codes. Although AutoEnginuity is expensive and certainly not suitable for 99% of common car owners, as it’s clearly designed for mechanic workshops.

  7. Which obd2 scan tool software to to start the manuel dpf regeneration and how to remove dpf fault?

    • for Ford nothing beats forscan but you to get the most out of it you need a j2534 device

  8. I have been using the ProScan since 2011 flawlessly. They still support it today as enthusiastically as 7 years ago when I was new car diagnostics and how useful it is in long run. The Company Total car diagnostics has excellent backup support and still alive today as from the start. Pleased they’re around so long and so active still.

  9. I own a Windows-10 laptop. The obd software by TOAD supplied, installed without problems. Update the diagnostic obd software according to the instructions, and all went well. The last update appears to be 1 week old, so I’m glad Total car Diagnostics is active in software development.

Successfully determined what was causing my SES [Service Engine Soon] lamp on my 2006 Saturn VUE with 3.0L V6 [it was a thermostat dtc fault code P0128]. Very sad, the thermostat is buried inside of the engine under the intake manifold and intake spreader. This will be an expensive fix [6.1 hours of shop time plus about $50 for the part]– yet another thing that was made by monkeys.

OBD software also cleared the code just fine, but in this winter weather in Vegas, NV, I suspect it will come right back because the engine is not warming up to specs [>= 179F in 14 minutes], and the thermostat is instead regulating at 169F-181F. I used the “Live Data” feature of the TOAD software to watch the engine temperature while driving to work. The thermostat is initially closed, but it appears that it is opening too soon [and regulating at too low of a temperature]. Nevertheless the temperature sensor is almost never the cause of this failure. Will attempt to test and/or replace it anyway, because that is a lot cheaper than replacing the thermostat.

NO regrets about the obd software purchase. I also like very much the instant check to see if the vehicle is ready for a smog test [it’s a one-button test]. Will use this test before I smog the vehicle next year.

  10. You don’t have to be a mechanic or get a technician to resolve simple problems of your car – which you can do yourself with some courage, time and a obd diagnostic tool. Thats why finally decided to buy of the OBD software on this page, together with ELM327 unit. My friend told me about the obd2 software and scantool he was using to diagnose problems of his car everytime they popped up. Especially because he does lot of offroading.

Therefore I am glad to have used the software. Also it’s affordable rather than going back and forth to the auto repair shop to have the vehicle checked. I purchased TOAD because of an engine light that was on, in less then five minutes it had detected the culprit and erased the code, and the light was shut off.

I didn’t even get my hands dirty! Haha. Superb product, very handy and easy to use by click or tap on your laptop touchscreen.

  11. I’ve owned TOAD obd2 software for pc for 6 months now and it’s worked great for me on Audi Q3 2014. Considering never tried obd 2 software nor knowing dangers of voiding car warranty, I was cautious for a while of using obd software. After reading more about it and discovering it CAN NOT change anything in car, but only READ data, then immediately started searching for obd software to use on my laptop.

Anyway, came to this page, purchase obdii software TOAD, and it certainly payed for itself by helping my car pass inspection with a P0420 code. I erased the code, drove the car until all the monitors were ready and went and got an inspection before the light came back on. Good reliable obd2 software in overal and recommending to friends.

  12. My check engine light MIL came on the other day so I dropped by the local parts store and ask it they could verify it. Man behind the counter said we don’t do that anymore, was suprised by the statement.

I have always had them check the code and 90% of the time I buy what sensor or what ever and replace it myself. I’m an industrial mechanic so most of the time I can handle these types of fixes. Well I went to another place I don’t frequent as much same story, we do not do that anymore.

Don’t know if this is a local thing or if this is trending across the country but in any case it was the perfect excuse for me to get a hold of a good scanner myself and check this myself.

Did a little research, came to this page, bought one of the obd2 software and elm327 wifi device. Install the software, plugged WIFI into vehicles obd port, and connected to Windows. Took right off and magic within 5 sec I had the output showning the problem.

Seems my coolant valve opened prematurely one cold morning and it was a flow sensor fault. I reset fault went away and has not returned. If it comes back, I’ll be armed with solution, and may have to replace that thermo valve, but now I’m always informed.

  13. What is your customer email/name? Can’t find you by your aol email address. There was never a time when we didn’t refund once it was returned.

  14. An obd software as mentioned in these reviews has more worth then most car owners realize. For example, it’s easy to ignore until actual problem shows up. Meaning if owner doesn’t have OBD2 app software handy, then there’s inconvenience of mobile mechanic or driving broken car, or not driving it at all. That’s what I found in my experience of using various obd2 software and apps like this. You need it most, probably not today, but tomorrow. But because tomorrow hasn’t come, one feels like “I don’t need this obd2 hype”. If you have a car, need obd software for laptop.

  15. I am trying to find an OBD2 that can coordinate with any smartphone to identify when the auto’s ignition is turned on or off and relay that information to the smart phone regardless of whether or not the phone is logged into – probably using app software.

I am actually looking for a manufacturers of such products with contact information (telephone numbers).

    Thanks,
    Dan

    • But how will that be accomplished when OBD2 device needs car’s Ignition to be ON, for OBD2 device to work in the first place?

  16. Some of these products are lifesavers. I drive a 2008 Chrysler PT Cruiser and I recently acquired a new engine motor for it. Mechanic did a mediocre job and I have a list of problems with MIL check engine light reappearing. As a young female unfamiliar with vehicle dynamics, I find mobile based obd apps especially simple to use and lets me to know if there is a considerable problem with my car or just the usually glitch. And the Price is great too. Got ELM327 wifi from totalcardiagnostics.

    • Agree. For the price of a typical mechanic scan, a good reliable obd2 scanner and decent diagnostic software is the way to go. We have 4 vehicles a Toyota, Honda, Nissian, & Dodge and it works on all of them. My husband Had one previously which he had to buy a manual for the Honda to look up codes. This one comes with the codes.

  17. I purchased PCMscan obd software to use in a 1999 VW, what a life saver. The only thing I would fault, if anything, is GUI is slightly outdated. The graphs and data layout itself is perfectly intuitive and will give you vehicle DTC’s and the description/explanation of those codes, very useful. It’s instantly downloadable.

The instructions are actually very good and comprehensive directions are included to tell you exactly what every function does and how to use it in the software. This scanner software does not allow you to operate sensors or solenoids or actuators you will need a $1500+ unit if you need to do that.

  18. I have a 2002 Toyota Corolla LE. A recurring “check engine” light problem had me running to a mechanic every few months. Always the same result: evaporative emissions leak. Three changes of gas cap, one smoke detection test, significant outlay of $, and the issue is still unresolved. However, all mechanics have agreed that the problem is not critical. I purchased Total OBD & ECU Auto Diagnostics Software (TOAD by TotalCarDiagnostics) EOBD diagnostic scantool to reset the “check engine” light and, should it come back on, I can check the code myself to see if it’s the same problem or something else that may require more immediate attention. T.O.A.D OBD scanner is affordable, easy to use, and worked exactly as I’d hope. I’m very pleased. Definately not a scam. Not fraud. Not hype.

  19. What is difference between obd software for Windows, and obd application on Android/iOS? Do they share same scanning capability?

  20. Do any of these obd software analyse car ABS/Airbag? I know many obd2 apps which certainly work, but few do manufacturer car systems like ESC, DTC, ABS, SRS, etc.

  21. Not mentioning which, but one of the mentioned software packages is point on. My check engine light came on in my Sierra vehicle. I followed the instructions and the dtc code come on the “Pending codes” section of the application. I changed the part and plug elm327 kiwi bluetooth scantool again, and the code was clear. I would encourage you to purchase wisely, or spend 60-100 buck for the car mechanic to do the same thing you can do.

  22. Tried OBD Auto Doctor software and TOAD-Scan. Later is preferred and works perfect. Both have excellent clean and intuitive GUI. I used it on my daughters car it found the problem I bought the part, cleared the code and she passed her inspection. Not only did I save $120 diagnostic fee but also the $50 which dealership incurs to reset the codes. Well worth the money, my dad is ordering one to have in his workshop garage.

  23. Tried most of these software. They’re idiot proof. Except part for rookie Pc users installing ELM327. But once you get the drivers installed, plug it in underneath your dashboard just to the left of your steering wheel. Turn on your car. Only then load up the obd2 software (not before).

From then on, they all basically work the same. Bunch of tabs. Each offers functions like Freeze frame, dtc’s, monitoring. Nearly all give you 2 choices about fault. One is to look it up (takes you to online site), and other is to clear it. I have a Subaru 2009 Outback, and they all actually read vehicles codes successfully.

I noticed TOAD-Scan read 2 more codes then ‘OBD Auto Doctor’ which isn’t reviewed nor mentioned on this page, yet another worthy long time software which I think should be included to make this a fair comparison.

  24. I caused short circuit on returning gearbox , there was a smoke in the main loom. I eliminated the circuit and it was fine. I couldn’t have signal for injection on my diesel common rail injectors. It started and ran for a while but check came on and it just stopped. I plug a diagnostic machine and it says main ECU power open and this 002, kindly assist what is it exactly wrong by referring to the code. Will automotive diagnostics software detect this?

    • Automotive diagnostic software nor manufacturer powered OBD code reader won’t necessarily detect this problem. Need oscilloscope.

  25. I ended up buying a handheld Autel obd2 reader from Amazon, as software is too complicated for my hands-on type. Anyway, always wanted to be able to see for myself when the Check Engine light goes on, what does it really imply and ask of the car driver.

I’ve now used the tool (more like a code reader) on a few different cars now and it works quite well and is pretty easy to use. I was able to scroll through the menus pretty easily and I REALLY appreciate that I can disable the beeping sound of button clicks. The Autel MD802 software is a must install so you can easily print out your data. In addition, you can update the software on your device with a click of a button.

The more I play with it the more I’m learning about my cars. It can be a little overwhelming because there is much data to assimilate. I’m not a mechanic, so I just take my time for anything that wish more details on. Again, I find handhelds simpler to navigate through the menus and it’s cool to see live data, just like these mentioned auto repair software. My Ford passes successfully smog, but the O2 sensor triggers the MIL malfunctioning check engine light which is an automatic fail.

However, now I am able to turn of the light and they won’t try to up sell me on service. This is money well spent on this code reader. I know about car software options, but to me, I makes sense to save time by avoiding the painful installation. With these handheld obd2 tools, just plug it in, turn on car, and instantly the data shows. No need to install anything.

  26. Where can I find ELM327 drivers for these obd car diagnostics software? Tried fusion, doctor so far. However some PC scan tools on this page look lot better.

    • Fusion and OBD doctor are mobile based right. Try car diagnostic computer based tools. They’ll usually show mode 08 data which mobile scanners will avoid. EG: VIN number is mode 08.

  27. In last 5 years, we’ve used various Autel/Launch types of obd ii scanners. They’re of of course another level then DIY (Amazon like) car code scanners. What’s more their OEM functions provide OEM manufacture obd codes when connected to vehicles obd connector.

However, what’s lacking sometimes is real estate of screen space. I figured software-type car software would rate better in this department. So looked up for some obd 2 scantools for windows/mac and this page came up. The obd2 scan tools I spoke of earlier certainly excel in amount of MIL (fault codes) reported.

However I see ELM327 mini (or WIFI/Bluetooth) being connected to PC, certainly has advantages. For example the Dyno charts are colorful and easier to read then handheld code readers. Ended up buying one of obd software from this review page. Hooked it up to Bluetooth OBD2 device, and very pleased. Thanks for this review page. Saved us time looking manually.

    • I would really like to have a private conversation with you can you kindly hit me up :marioservani@gmail.com

  28. Thank you for this article. We are in the market for obd2 scanner with more capabilities than the basic code reader. We also have experience utilizing autoenginuity and we would like to see some of the ECU mapping features of TOAD. This has been very beneficial to us making a decision.

  29. This is probably my first review, so I’m not gonna go full out. I’m as clueless on vehicles like most average drivers. The only lights I could read without a book are the oil change, seatbelt & open door. I bought ProScan when I saw a light turn on and didn’t want to get cheated by mechanic for overwhelming fees.

Didn’t know what to expect, but watched some YouTube videos on obd tools/software, used ProScan as directed and couldn’t be happier. I’m active duty military and took it to my base the next day and practically telling anyone that wanted to hear to purchase it. They could have sworn I am getting a commission because of how I advocated the software. It worked for me and I feel like I have an honest pocket carry on mechanic.

  30. I will continue to endorse your Toad !

We have continued to scan cars and pickup trucks for friends. Although we do not run a garage we are sometimes called in to a friend’s garage to help with solution finding and problem solving. (They already have a OBDII scanner… LOL).

Frank has mustang (plane Jane) the car feels gutless. I would like to increase the performance for him, but I don’t know how to do it. (there is no rush) How do start on this? I will scan it and save the file. this will provide the actual present condition and set up ? then… this is where I would need your guidance.

  31. In overall TOAD (Total OBD & ECU Auto Diagnostics) is an excellent diagnostic software that “just works”. Of course TotalCarDiagnostics has superior customer service. Besides that, I got this up and running TOAD (Total OBD & ECU Auto Diagnostics) within 10 minutes. I’ve had a few hand-held devices and Wow!! Haven’t tried others on this page, but happy with what I’ve got.

I wouldn’t trade this in for any of my old sets. It only took about 2 minutes to get this hooked up to the port of my 2005 Chrysler and I am by no means a computer whiz being middle-aged and probably took longer than I needed to in getting it set-up.

Thanks to great support this is the best OBD2 diagnostic software and scanner I’ve ever used to date.

  32. First time I tried to use one of these and a message came on saying , last update failed ,update is necessary linking to pc , I waited a while nothing happens can any one please help

  33. For ordinary users, Bluetooth OBD scanners are more suitable for OBD software for laptop. They can also do full-system diagnosis and also provide special tools like Reset BLEED, Reset TBMS, Reset TDPF, Reset Oil, Immobilizer/Keys and so on. EZcheck and EasyDiag are both good choice for handheld. While for obdii software, certainly one of obd2 software mentioned on this page. Good reviews.

  34. Free Movi software on MAC is super. Does all I need it to rest emissions on car, get it ready for inspection.

  35. Works great on my 2003 Porsche 911. The new 10% ethanol gas requirement makes my car throw a check engine light every thousand miles or so… TOAD Windows software let’s me clear the code so quickly via cars obd2 port, I can do it while sitting at a stop light with the engine running.

  36. What is best car diagnostics application for Linux? All these software are for Windows/Mac. Emulation doesn’t work. Seems OBD software isn’t that popular on linux.

    • Try the OBD Auto Doctor. It is for Linux. Linux Mint has it even ready for installation. It works on my Mercedes-Benz V-class.

  37. Cool thanks. Was looking for best windows 10 obd2 software and found it on this page. Tried EOBD-Facile, but find toad-pro lot more professional and user friendly.

  38. Attention the license EOBD Faciel is valid for 2 activations during 2 years only. This is stated in the general conditions of sale…

  39. My car’s check engine light once again turned on-just in time for the vehicles yearly inspection. The local lube/inspection workshop ran a diagnostics on it, (car flunked the inspection since MIL light was on).

The diagnostic showed code P0171, “running too lean”. Same code I got 2 years earlier, same vehicle, which ultimately cost me over $450, to be repaired by a local supposedly “honest repair shop”.

It turned out the $450, was to clean injectors and change filters. I was committed this time I could do something about the issue and definitely save some money. So I Googled, came to this page, and purchased TOAD obd software with it’s included connector.

Ran the diagnostics, received the same code. I manually changed the air filter-was needed, and added Lucas 10020 Upper Cylinder Lubrication & Injector Cleaner 5.25 oz. to petrol tank-spent less than $20.

After 2-3 days of driving with the injector cleaner in my tank and changing the filter, I cleared the MIL indicator lamp with this software. Did a full drive cycle (what entails a “drive cycle” is listed in the service manual for your vehicle) returned to the inspection place, and passed.

The mechanics there asked me where I went to repair the issue, (they had nicely recommended an outfit), told them I did it myself! They were impressed, and I was thrilled with being able to take care of this issue alone.

Couldn’t have done it without this handy obd (obd2? what’s difference?) software. Very easy to use on Windows lappy. Highly recommend for anyone!

  40. I found obd2 software for laptop as listed here far outperforms (1) gui of most mobile applications, and (2) can be used in professional environments like auto workshops. Using mobile obd2 is way to unprofessional and unreliable.

  41. I did a few test runs yesterday. On one trip of about 30 miles that was almost all interstate, the misfire count was 19, 9, 4, 3 on cylinders 1, 2, 3, 4 respectively. I could feel it missing, and at one point could feel what felt like slow oscillation of the timing: going up one hill at about 65 mph, it was like a strong headwind holding it back and then letting it loose and then holding it back and then letting loose…. But no codes???

  42. i bougt toad a few days ago and really enjoy the ease of use i am completly satisfied with toad. thankyou for your time have a good day

  43. Do you have an option for functional tests to manually actuate solenoids, fuel regulators ,etc through my toad software ? Looking to actuate oil and fuel solenoids for diesel testing and currently looking to open vvt solenoids on a dodge/chrysler engine in an attempt to flush or “unstick” the phazer actuator. Thank you for any assistance

  44. I was monitoring the 02 sensors on my 07 Grand Caravan. I noticed the voltage scaling of the graph kept changing, depending on the voltage at the time. This is equivalent to changing the voltage setting on an oscilloscope. You can make a waveform look very different by changing the sensitivity of the measuring device. Normally the scaling would be 0.1 v as a minimum. and 0.9 volt as a max, but many times on the #2 02 sensor the min was 0.8 volts and the max was also 0.8 volts. In that case I should not see a waveform, but a flat line. I saw a changing waveform. Is there a software bug? I would think both o2 sensors should be graphed using the same voltage scaling, so that if I wanted to visually overlay them I would be looking at similarly scaled information.

  45. Got the Toad obd2 software seeing this page on Google. 1 week later, it’s an incredibly powerful OBD software to have in your tool box, for both self repair, and regular checkups.

It’s dongle is small enough to tag around where you need it (and easy to monitor on test drives once software is loaded). I would have paid a couple hundred more for this. The software is very stable and up to date. Scans EVERY engine module available in the car and displays data PIDs for the modules found. Perfect for do it yourself diagnosing. Only thing it doesn’t do is bi-directional testing and programming. Which is when you buy a seperate tuner kit. MOst however will never both car-tuning. Basically a must for any competent technician.

  46. Fairly recently I purchased your TOAD software and ELM327. When I
originally got the system setup and working, I did have some problems
connecting to the ELM but got that all resolved. Today and for the last
several days I have not been able to connect to the ELM. I’ve followed your
help page on trouble shooting connections and at this point I still cannot
connect. I uninstalled the TOAD software to ensure the drivers were correct
as I’m using windows 10/64bit. Also tried detecting the ELM in different
ignition positions and each time the red light comes on and remains on as
well as testing my COM ports in case my Bluetooth dongle was the problem.
On my system settings under devices the OBD 11 is recognized/paired and the
Bluetooth indicates it is working. As recommended on your help page I
tried changing my COM port settings to a baud rate of 110bps. Now they are
reset to original values of 9600bps. After reading somewhere, I also hooked
up my trickle battery charger to ensure the low battery system was not
blocking my connection. My headlights and tail lights come on when the
ignition is in the final position before starting. Are the drivers that
the software installs use the correct drivers for my windows 10/64bit PC
    system?

  47. Without doubt TOAD obdii software is the “Rolls Royce” of the Elm327 scan tools per my research. The obdii software is jammed packed full of innovative features as compared to the other Elm327 obd software.

Specifically where Toad shines is with the following 3 unique functions, although others users may not agree:

    > Support for very high speed baud rates.
    > Double buffered message queue.
    > Remote upgrade capability.
    > High Speed Baud Rates and Double Buffering

The first two functions are primarily concerned at the high speed CAN protocol, the protocol used by all new vehicles manufactured since 2008.

When the CAN protocol was first introduced in vehicles during 2004/05, many Elm327 chipped diagnostic tools suffered from BUFFER FULL messages, as a result of the high speed CAN networks of the vehicle over running the small internal buffer of the Elm327 chip.

The Toad obd 2 software, with proper Elm327 genuine hardware, overcame this limitation with its unique double buffer support, so that BUFFER FULL messages were eliminated even at low speed baud rates.

    Anyway, just some technical contribution.

  48. Can also try free alternatives for obd software, for your laptop. Like EasyOBD which is a obd2 software for pc. Lets you turn your laptop or desktop PC into a sophisticated automotive diagnostics system. Currently, it can be used to read trouble codes, display their definitions, reset the MIL, and display real-time sensor data. Also got Scantool.net obdii software. Then if they work, can get these higher end laptop software.

    • I’m really happy with the car software by comparing 3 obd tools here. I run a mobile mechanic shop and use it on a daily basis. There are a few things that could be improved and a few would be nice to have added to the software.

But it works as it should most of the time. I wish it would connect to some vehicles that it doesn’t sometimes. Would be great if you could provide a fix for those. Then I would definitely give 5 stars.

  49. I have been using most of these listed obd 2 software to monitor my advance timing and knock Retard, thinking it was accurate. I was incorrect, and lucky I have not blown my motor.

I think there are other parameters that this is monitoring pretty close to right on like engine temperature, RPM’s and Air Intake Temperature.

When I did some data logging with the total car diagnostics obdii diagnostics software and there logging software, I found trusting it to be accurate based on common sense observation.

It’s a very cool application running on my lappy. But do not run above 91 octane, like 94-100 octane thinking this will let me know weather I’m getting knock retard. This obd 2 program was showing me -.5 to -3.0 Knock Retard all the time, and what I was really getting was +1.0 to +4.0 knock retard, timing being pulled back 6-7 deg.

This is not good, so just a heads up, don’t us this to monitor race gas. I say again my bad for trusting software. Hence for some things, you’ll need proper advanced tool and no obd scan tool software or some android app can read. Hence be smart before buying. Don’t expect it to replace a pro $2000 tool.

  50. Most of these mentioned OBDII software are similarly equipped with a complete array of vital features like built-in dynamometer to determine the horsepower and torque rating of the vehicle. Car owners can run basic scans to diagnose fault and error codes (DTCs and PIDs) but are unique in its ability to effectively store discovered fault codes on a vehicle’s ECU.

I all the OBD2 software on this page more or less copy each others features. For example they all automatically clears the DTC fault code to return to the original state after you’ve addressed issues with the fault codes. I mean, you can’t have a obd software for laptop, or for Android without this basic function.

Other uses for these aformentioned OBD 2 software is to generally assist vehicle owners in significantly reducing repair and maintenance costs to self-diagnose and pinpoint car issues and error codes.

  51. I found that this program helped me alot with my 370z. The laptop obd2 software worked like a charm and and user friendly in my opinion. I was having problems with a missfire in cylinder 2 and would have never known without it change on plugs and pack i was ready to go.

  52. Alex, Just thought I’d share this with you…. I provided the attached to our tech but maybe something will jump out at you since you work with these all the time. In the early part of the log, when the engine is pulling hills (once we roll through town and onto the interstate) is when the missing was most noticeable. The weird knock noise (that we’re told is NOT ping or pre-detonation) is between 11:37 and 11:42 as noted below. Here’s what I sent with the log, if you’re interested:

Here’s another “baseline” log: Even though the Encore is still running relatively well since I reset things by disconnecting the battery, I ran another log so that I have the road loop in excel format for you… that way when it gets to running really badly, there’s an excel file to compare that to.

Also: in driving this loop, we could feel what I call missing on all of the uphill grades plus “the noise” appeared 3 times. That noise is between 11:37 or :38 and 11:42. The first instance is the longest, followed by 2 shorter occurrences. The missing was earlier in the file, and should be where acceleration was strong.

This loop is down off our ridge into the town of Beaver, down the main drag to I-376, northwest on I-376 to Chippewa, down Route 51 the Wildwood Drive, and up Wildwood (a cowpath up a ravine) back to Dutch Ridge Road along the top of the ravine. The missing up hills was on I-376 running from Beaver to Chippewa. “The noise” was coming up a back road through a ravine to our ridge as we neared home.

Also attached are the summary stats from driving this loop. There were quite a few misfires recorded: this was just a short drive.

  53. I am looking for a way to scan codes, test (as in activate) evap components, and test the Steering Wheel Position Sensor on a 2001 suburban 5.3 1500. I am also needing to scan codes and do a reset on a 1994 Pontiac Grand Am with the 2.3 sohc engine. Already tried Android obdii software Dashcommand and obd2 software for windows 10, called EOBD Facile. But none worked. Will any of the obd 2 software reviewed on this page read body control module on 2001 suburban?

  54. After reviewing dozens of OBD software on Google and unconvinced by free demos available, I finally came to this page which confirmed my suspicious about various OBD2 software (for both MAC and windows laptops). Bought TOAD from totalcardiagnostics.com/toad. At first didn’t like it. Just another software with a fancy GUI. But grew to like it more due to it’s quantity of features (if you start exploring) – and settled on it finally.

In overal, the software is a confident performer in 20 days of using it And would depend on it if had no choice elsewhere. It’s price is high, but definitely justified for unlimited support. They gotta eat bread man!

The multiple graphical reports I’ve run and insights received have been invaluable to the car repair business.

For example, learned that one of vehicle’s turbo charger’s might be incorrectly performing and may require replacement.

There is plenty of info our shop has access to via this application which puts Android apps to shame. I have just scratched the surface digging through all of TOAD’s features (like many customization live graphs as mentioned on top).

  55. Decided on choice 1 software in the list. Arrived fast and in excellent condition. Worked on my first try on a 2008 Honda Accord V6. Scanned and got code (P1457). Reviewed code in software, erased code. Result? stagnate, “check engine light” (CIL) vanished! Easy. Saved me time, a trip to the shop, and an expensive diagnosis fee at mechanic shop.

    • If ANY of you think Auto Enginuity is worth a hoot you are sorely mistaken. It is the junkiest software I have ever used since computerized emissions started in the 80’s.

  56. Tried EOBD Facile. VERY inexpensive OBD II software. Serves its purpose well on MacBook air. This is my second try at testing obd software, know they’re not all created equal. Be advised this works on most cars but not all. It serves my purposes but I don’t use it on Dodge. It doesn’t function correctly on them (then again most scantools have issues with them). Works on 2 Jeeps and a Mercedes, so reading fault codes and or resetting them is a breeze. I DO have a way more expensive handheld that works on all vehicles but this is my go to option due to large screen real estate you have on laptop vs handheld. Quick to read, isolates a problem system so allows you to check micro switches etc – to narrow down where to look and why. Saves throwing money at something before confirming an issue. Worth the few $$$ for most people’s workshop. Hope this review helps make an informed choice on which scanner you need. For most DIYers this will suffice.

  57. OBD2 ELM327 with ProScan Windows viewed faults and diagnostics successfully detected P0220 and P0229, which caused me to fix the Throttle situations myself. Auto shop charges $40 to plug in the analyzer, so I’m ahead on this.

  58. I am starting my own on site repair service business as friends and friends of friends are sick of being ripped off. I need a cost effective scanner/programmer that can cover the range of cars I will be working on. The range varies from Holden, Chrysler, Hyundai, Toyota, Nissan, Ford, Mercedes Benz, BMW. The models are all models built or imported into Australia from 1992-2019. We found TOAD PRO so far to have decently worked on most vehicle, and decided to keep using it.

  59. Tried TOAD and it’s a great Windows software, that’s clearly putting mobile apps to shame! I used TOAD lite version (bought on eBay but no longer available there) for years before finally getting the Advanced version on the website. The paid “PRO” version is definitely worth the money. I have toad-scan paired with a cheap ELM 327 adapter (about $15 on eBay) and it works great on my Surface PRO 3. I have not come across any vehicle that TOAD can’t communicate with. It has saved me money on repairs on my truck and car as well as made money by diagnosing problems with other peoples vehicles. Would purchase again, even for twice the cost.

  60. Have bought Movi OBD app and using on Macbook pro 13. So I took the ZS 2.0 TD out for a blast to test the software. Bearing in mind it’s the 118 with decat, SDI injectors, boost increase (physical boost gauge showing 23Psi). Why was my maximum Bhp 93.4, and my max torque 177 and boost only showing 17.8?? Am I doing something wrong? Is it the ELM327 reader or the Movi obd2 app? And the car is fine btw. It pulls exactly like you would expect a car that’s producing around 134-145bhp with all the mods. Oh, and regarding the max bhp, I took the car right up to the redline with foot nailed to the floor in 1st, 2nd, 3rd and still the app showed a max of 93.4??

  61. I have used several obd 2 software’s in the past, but I have not liked them as much as I do TOAD obdii software. I have another handheld, more expensive and professional (in shop use) scanner (not obd software for laptop) – that I have been using. Which is similar in Total Car Diagnostic’s TOAD’s features… but seems will be using it a lot less as starting to favor obd2 software on computer as it’s real estate is more pleasing and easier to see.

The graphic user interface for example is coherently arranged in tabs, makes sense. It’s appreciated the software can can erase pending codes (which usually aren’t picked by Android obd applications like Torque), unlike the other scanner I have.

The obd 2 software allows you to monitor the engine while it runs and see what the sensors are doing in real time. Add to that, can monitor up to 10 data values in graphical visual mode, seeing charts.

The software also allows you to test oxygen sensors, plus type in codes to get an explanation of what the code is. In general, the software does a confident car review. One I feel I can trust. Which is vital in any OBD2 software whether for laptop, obd scanner, or OBD2 app for mobile.

  62. Looking at getting something that I can run a diagnostic on my ECU on a Dodge Caliber 2007. And consider TOAD, although still researching/reviewing, etc. Wanting to find out if my voltage regulator I bad without having to take it into a shop and pay up the wazoo just to find out or buying a new ECU if it’s not the problem with my car. So does the TOAD give me this type of info if my voltage regulator is bad and is it compatible with a Dodge in the first place I noticed reading through your site it said “Dodge/ Ram” not supported by is that dodges itself or a Dodge ram. And is this a feature the lite version can do by reading an ECU for a defective voltage regulator also would I be able to flash a new ECU with it…

  63. I originally bought Total car diagnostics OBD software for my Win 7 laptop, about 5 years ago, and never thought about reviewing it. The included obd2 software worked great up until recently when it wouldn’t connect to my wife’s vehicle.

However, the obdii software would connect to my car just fine. I sent an email to Total car diagnostics – asking them if there had been any updates to the adapter and obd2 software, since the one i originally bought.

About a day later Gary wrote me back and said there were no updates to the software. He had me do some tests and then offered to check my interface/adapter if i sent it to them. I sent it to them and a few days later they sent me a brand new one.

I was not expecting this kind of support from them for a device that was 4+ years out of warranty. Sorry for the long review, i just thought i should share my experience. The new elm327 adapter works perfect on TOAD-Scan obd2 software for my Pc.

  64. I bought ProScan and ELM327 bluetooth from totalcardiagnostics on eBay with a little skepticism, reading everything about bad clones really put me off. This product is the real deal, no delay, works every time. Tested on Windows 10. I believe this is the cheapest, most reliable product for reading OBDII diagnostics over Bluetooth. I know of Android options, but laptops just give more real estate, so can see 4-5 graphs simultaneously. You can’t do this on Android phone or tablet.

  65. Read this article. Already former buyer of TOAD-Lite back in 2011. Their proscan software is still excellent, holding up to modern auto industry changes. Didn’t know about pro ver though. May upgrade later, but happy camper since 2011.

  66. I am a professional tuner and I would need an OBD professional tool to perform diagnostic, check live data, something that your software has got.
More than this I would need the access to adaptation and calibration of certain parameter, for example in FIAT vehicles (Magneti marelli ECUs) can be the clutch learning for start stop functionality or perform the phonic wheel alignment (by accelerating from idle three times till max engine speed) This are needed sometimes after a remap. Upon using reviewing TOAD Pro functionality, I see it can do everything other then wheel alignment.

  67. Tried all these obd2 software on my Windows PC. I’ve given up trying to make them work on my focus (99) as the car is notorious for being hard to communicate with being ford at that age and i hav the right cable for that anyway. The ELM327 cable works fine on the polo 6c. I have but it has rod errors in a box after a full scan via professional obd2 software for laptop like toad-scan.

I have just scanned a 2017 skoda Rapid whose HVAC (specifically the AC cold) is working erratically, and it has 262913 – ROD – Unknown Error Code . Do you know what this code is m8? The skoda I checked for a family member before they take it back to skoda (again) so it’s more out of curiosity and not urgent but any updates you can give me for my device or software would be sweet. By the way, can recommend to others I’ve tried all but EOBD-Facile on this page, and toad-pro in personal opinion is best computer car diagnostic software I’ve used yet. Something better may come in future, but for now, sticking with best.

    • Is is obd or odb software? One is a misspelling. Also has anyone used OBD Fusion from obdsoftware? I see it’s not reviewed on this page, even though good portable odb app on Android/iOS.

  68. Was looking for automotive diagnostic software reviews and came to this page. I think there is no best automotive diagnostic software. Some have OEM pid’s, while poor ECU code returns. Others excellent ECU/transmission codes, while no abs/srs. Thus how to conclude best scan tool software? Impossible. Depends on your needs.

  69. The Mac obd 2 software is poor compared to Windows equivalent. EG: TOAD-Scan has tons of measuring graphics, and customizable GUI… while reviewing the others, it’s all static, and doesn’t give much flexibility with monitoring multiple PID’s along side.

I’m using Dell XPS 13 PC/laptop with Win 10, and ELM327 Bluetooth works fast. However USB cable is about 4x faster, which is important for car mechanics.

Finally, if you’re a mechanic, none of the reviewed obd software on this page would be sufficient, as none do proper job of OEM scans like electronics, Dash, ABS, Airbag, etc. However for generic OBD 2 diagnostics, I only recommend to colleges TOAD software from totalcardiagnotsics, as they’ve been ACTIVE in this game for over 8 years far as I know.

  70. Used ProScan software. It has saved me a few times from going to the local auto parts store or even a mechanic to check why the check engine light is there it works really really well and worth every cent.

    • Trying to get the ProScan Software the link in the above article leads to TOAD. Also via Internet the version ProScan 5.9 from 2011 can be found. What happened to this asoftware? Some users are comfortable with it and I dont understand why this tool is not available any more.
Do you have a working link for this software?
I have already the ELM327 hardware with Bluetooth

      Kind Regards

      Andreas

  71. I found most iOS scan tools are inadequate to Android counterparts. While Windows obd2 scan tool apps superior to Android and iOS, in terms of real estate screen (won’t matter to car owners, but does to professional mechanic shops). Thus our comparison between Windows, Android, iOS platforms has forced us to resort to a Windows laptop app.

  72. For those who are confused: There are two types of obd2 scantools: the handheld units that have a connection cable and screen as well as smaller units that plug into the car’s OBD port and connect to a phone or tablet via Bluetooth. The best obd2 scantool we tested are small enough to fit in a glove box and were purchased from Amazon for less than $100. However today’s cars also have inbuilt diagnostic system on them. Thus one step higher is obd2 scantool software. That’s the advantage of obd software over handheld readers.

  73. I have a Ford F450 built as an RV. The main fuel tank has a capacity of 50 gallons, unlike the factory tank which has a 19 gallon capacity.

As a result, the out-of-fuel reminder system starts warning me that the tank is nearly empty when in fact it is more than half full. I would like to find and change the memory location that specifies the size of the fuel tank.

I recognize that you won’t know off the top of your head where this information is stored.

What I’m wondering is whether obd2 scantool system will allow me to read enough of the ECU memory to reverse compile and decode the software to figure out how to make this change. Or any of obd2 software mentioned on this page. I have Windows laptop PC.

I have extensive (>40 years) experience working on embedded systems, so I’m not concerned about the technical problem of reverse compiling and understanding the software, only about whether I can get the bytes out of the ECU memory, and once I’ve figured out what byte(s) to change, make that change without crashing the ECU.

  74. Bought TOAD-pro obd2 scantool. After utilizing for 1 week, I’m biased to say is one of best auto scan tools that I have ever used and well worth the price. Certainly not “the best”, because all obd2 scantools have pluses/minuses.

My check engine light was illuminated on my pickup and the obd software of laptop, read the codes and provided information as to what was wrong.

The dealership read the same codes and confirmed that the malfunctioning check engine light were exactly what the obd-ii software had picked up.

After I repaired my truck, my daughter drove it down the road as I ran a complete analyses on my truck’s performance. I could not believe all the information the scan tool provided.

    • I’ve always used generic readers before never realizing what I was missing out on. I didn’t get any of the scantools on this page. Got generic obd2 code reader. It allowed me to quickly and easily diagnose a problem in a car I was flipping. It told me exactly what the problem was.

One of the added benefits is being able to change ‘hidden’ options through programming that you couldn’t get to before. Just make sure you have downloaded the correct software for your vehicle and you are good to go.

  75. Hi, I have tried all the free software and did not find any of it had more than code reading. I am wanting to know the best paid software available that will give live sensor data and waveform.

  76. how does pc software compare with obd2 applications on mobile devices? Does windows/mac have advantage over mobile? I find mobile move convenient, but feel it’s missing professionalism of laptop based programs. thanks.

  77. I’m looking for wideband AFR meter with data logging capability. Will a Jet spectrum tuner interface cable work with any of these laptop software?

    • AFR I believe is mode 10. A typical car diagnostics software will only go up to mode 08, unless it includes adds to read PID’s of specific models.

  78. Hi I brought your software. And so far I’m impressed with it. It does ask for another licence code which say I have to get in touch with you for it.Also can TOAD update soft ware on a Volvo V70 08 D5 2.4. I also have a VXDIAG NANO which I would like to use on TOAD as it reads every thing on a Volvo.would it be possible to connect?Thank you for your help and look forward to your reply.

  79. I am interested in an electronic interface together with wiring and software dedicated to read and write of the electronic control modules via the OBD diagnostic port or a dedicated connector, meeting the following requirements:

    – The set should contain: hardware interface, software for the PC (for Windows) and connection cables
    dedicated to individual groups and types of electronic control modules;
    – The ability to read and write electronic control modules via the OBD diagnostic port or a dedicated
    connector;
    – The ability to expand the list of supported protocols and ensure their update;
    – Ensuring full access to factory data saved in electronic control modules, including their reading from
modules, modifications and writing to modules
    – Battery voltage control;
    – Possibility to check and remove any error codes (DTCs) in electronic control modules;
    – Automatic checksum correction;
    – Guarantee of security of operations, data integrity and write FLASH memory of modules even in the
    event of a PC failure;
    – Option to restore the original settings in case of an error;
    – No restrictions associated with supported file providers;
    – Ability to provide support in the form of courses.

TOAD-Pro satisfied all requirements, except reading/writing to modules and “Automatic checksum correction” as that needs extra tuner kit, but then again, only car chip programmers would needs this.

  80. Earlier today i purchased your TOAD obd2 software. I plan to use your product in my car workshop (all the advanced options it offers) and would like to ask, what kind of spec does my laptop require to run smooth and to give me ability to use all the options that your program offers.

  81. I have two vehicles to service and I see from the product description TOAD software covers most if not all of what I need.

First vehicle I want to service is a 2015 Audi A4 that requires brake work which I am upgrading to larger calipers, but need ability to place EPB into service mode and once work is complete set system to new pad width. Also would like to performance tune the ECU.

Next car is a Subaru Outback (2014) that requires some extended data logging so I can trace a shifting issue with the CVT. No fault errors are logged so dealer says wait and see, but issue has the potential of being dangerous (over revving engine or cause stall – not something I wanting happening at 65…mph on the highway)

I assume the obd software TOAD will work for these applications. Or some other professional obd2 software for laptop?

  82. Hi, I’ve got an exhaust fluid fault and there’s a process for resetting the fault that requires monitoring several precesses – including temperatures and reductant injection. Can you tell me if any of these listed obd programs have the ability to read the Ford DEF exhaust fluid details?

We know ForScan obd2 software for PC has this capacity. But if doesn’t have helpful live OBD graphs, hence the question.

  83. Hello I am looking at this TOAD Product and I have a 2018 Dodge Challenger R/T. Now I saw below that a good way to tell if your product will work on a car try EasyOBD2.

I did and that program would not find the ports on my laptop even with correct drivers I did however have success with 4 other programs, Palmer PCMScan, OBD2SPY and Touch Scan.

I have the OBD2-All-In-One-Scan USB interface so I tried this with my Challenger and there was cross talk between the programs on my laptop of Windows 10 and the ECM of my Challenger.

Even one of the programs pulled the Vin Number into the program. With this in Mind will your Your Product TOAD be a Home solution for me also have a 2010 Ford fusion.

I like the fact that this program is Bi directional even capable of possible programming.

    ELM327 Chip Driver

    TouchScan Worked
    PCMSCAN Worked
    ScanXL Worked
    OBD2Spy Worked
asyObdII_v2 Did Not Work as this did not find USB ports although program (ports are Ok)

Thank you I hope I discussed enough information to give a complete answer to my question.

  84. I definitely have the following setup in my combi van. It is missing the optional 15 pin, but it has all the rest.

ISO9141 and 14230 (KWP2000) must have pin 7 while pin 15 is optional (the connector must have metallic contacts inside pins 4, 5, 7, 15, plus 16.)

    And I also have optional ones in 1, 11 & 13 also.

That should make this KWP fast as I have mentioned finding out earlier, so can I ask the questions again about your TOAD product, with this new information.

    1) The TOAD says you can ‘hack’ the engine. I have seen some people selling the software to change engine settings, but they have not said what hardware or software is required. Is the TOAD software capable of changin these settings (in order to hack the engine)?

    2) If so, what is the best way to connect it. I do have a MAC & an IPHONE. Although if neither of those are of use, I may be able to borrow a laptop, but would prefer not to.

    3) I was considering getting

    4) Will this software shut off or reset the airbag light also?

  85. I was wondering if you were able to supply OBD 2 hardware and OBD 2 software for DPF/EGR delete in Isuzu trucks. Most commonly 2008-2012 N series with 3.0L 4jj1 engine? I am a Heavy Diesel tech in New Zealand and have a few customers requiring this service.

  86. Tried different obd ii scanners for reading obd2 codes. In my reading and studying IM240 and other error codes. I had a ECU on the car listed where the ECU relay drive output to the HVAC secondary fan relay failed and latched in the corresponding code.

I subsequestly found a used replacement ECU on ebay and bought it and was able to get the car smogged. I’m wondering if I can re-program or configure another or unused relay output drive line to repair the original ECU with your software. I assume this isn’t job of an obd scanning tool, right? Thanks.

  87. I’m potentially interested in TOAD obd2 scantool. I currently have a Jaguar X type that requires an injector coding. I already have a selection of OBD2 cables (2) which appear to work with less able software.

Will TOAD obd2 software work with these cables if they work with other software thereby confirming the cable is OK.

Will I be able to code the Injector? I’m half expecting that other injectors will start to fail making the software worthwhile. If it was a single injector and that was that I’d probably support my local garage always assuming he’s open in current circumstances.

  88. I am curious after looking for an obd2 windows software. I just wanted to ask if your software can reset/evaluate Subaru ABS,SPS (steering position sensor), Air Bag and I’ll of the other safety codes and sensors. I’m considering your software but let’s say I like your answer to my questions here and I buy your software… After buying your software I realize the software for TOAD PRO is not for me in whichever way that may be… Will I get a refund of any kind?? Like a 90 day trial period etc. 400$ is a lot of money and if I buy this product instead of a mid grade obd scanner what do I do if it does not do what it is said to do??? I cannot go to the parts store and return it.

  89. HELLO

I have only few months experience of fixing cars.
and i am looking for OBD2 software.

i am working on kia, hyundai, toyota, subaru, mitsubishi cars.

which software is best for me ?
(very impotent is the software updates for new car models)

    thank you

  90. Trying to get some Advanced PIDs operational on the TOAD-pro obd2 software on my laptop. Have the X-gauge instructions for the command, but trying to determine how X-gauge and Toad correlate. EG. DPF Soot Load has Txd of 07E0 2138, Rxf of 0321 0000 0000, Rxd of 4008 and Maths of x2

Referring to console dump attached, 2138 command is shown, the Rxf of 03(3rd byte) and 21 (data to be matched) is on the second line, and then the Rxd of 4008 refers to the data starting at the 8th byte, and is 8 bits long, which here looks to be the value 17h.

Using the Advanced config for the PID in Toad, I assume that to get this value into the PID maths as “A”, I would need to use a byte offset of 18? Any ideas.

For this very reason I’m looking for best computer car diagnostic software. Unfortunately, everything seems basic so far.

  91. Which one of these kits allows users to see ALL error codes (meaning ECM, TCM, BCM, Brake, SRS, etc)?

Which kits will display emission system readiness monitor status?

Which kits have data logging functionality for ALL parameters?

  92. Can I program new IMA codes with TOAD obd2 software? If I can, how do I do it?

    Injection quantity compensation:

If the DDE control unit has been replaced, it will also be necessary to carry out adjustment of the injectors!

The adjustment value (7-position letter/number code) is engraved on each injector.

Enter the numbers/letters according to the installation location (cylinder) of the injectors.

    Select “DDE”.
    Select ”Adjustment, injection quantity compensation”
    Select ”Test plan”
The adjustment must be entered for each cylinder on which an injector has been replaced.

It is necessary to adjust the new injectors to ensure their full operability.

  93. After completing some work on the head, the cars starts and runs perfectly from using the obdii diagnostic software. But begins to hunt rpm and if shut off will crank but not start again.

I am seeing throttle body codes P0120 and p0122. Research suggests that I must take the car out of “limp mode” by resetting the ECU. Any obd 2 programmer can resolve this?

Which software, and what procedure, should I use to do this? (This is the reason I bought Toad obd laptop software ; I finally received my OBD2 adapter today and successfully connected, but cannot see the option in Toad to reset any adaptions).

  94. #1- Will TOAD obd software show all misfire counts on each of the 8 cylinders on one screen. #2- Can I remap the F/A and timing (tuning) and send to ecm?. #3- if a cam or crank shaft position sensor is replaced will the software be able do a relearn or recalibration?

  95. Hi, I am looking for a obd 2 programmer and obd ii software for windows 10 laptop that will enable me to set the Towbar/Hitch as fitted to the car. The vehicle has a veical specific tow electical hit form Westafella but i need to set the car so that the Parking sensors switch off etc.

Which is best obd scanning tool for this job please?

  96. I’m sure this will be deleted. If you can’t see that this website is also owned by “Toad” and can’t see that the positive reviews are done by their staff only (notice the only replies are done with questions about their products), then you are just throwing your money away.

    • Yes, most reviews like this get removed. Why? Because they are big generalizations. Most common is using words like “Scam, fraud”. What does that even mean? They’re based on emotional reactions. And not rational, detailed explanations of what EXACTLY is the flaw.

Face it, when someone is unhappy with product, are they responding rationally, intelligently… or emotionally?

      99% of time, it’s emotional.

Which is why most negative reviews are actually useless. They don’t help anyone.

It’s like saying to you “You are a bad person”.

That reveals my ignorance. What does “Bad” even mean? If I can’t specifically state what I don’t like, then my opinion has no merit, scientific approach to it.

      • Alex, I’m looking for a powerful OBDII tool that works flawlessly on my MacBook Pro that can give me better diagnostic and better graphing capability. Is there anything like a 60 day free trial availabe How will this TOAD PRO out perform my Foxwell Multi-Application Service Tool NT650Elite do?

  97. I have ’09 diesel X-Trail with a P0409 frozen code in it. We have replaced the EGR, the vacuum hoses and the solenoid but the P0409 code can’t be cleared by the software I am currently using. Will TOAD obd software be able to clear it and perform a relearn?

Can it also measure the carbon buildup and DPF status?

  98. I’m having a long time issue with my wife’s 2009 KIA Borrego, getting code P0019 on a regular basis but without any of the symptoms. I have fixed, and replaced almost all the main components associated with this malfunction code, and I’m still getting it the code on a regular basis. The only thing left to do is to use a scan tool to activate the timing control solenoids, and watch the engine sputter a little after the valve activates, and the ECM tries to catch up. The sputter is an indication that the valve is working and does not need to be replaced, see below. There are four in this vehicle to test.

  99. Do you know if your software will allow changes to values in the ECU other than the fuel mapping and things like that? I’m specifically looking to change a rev limiter value in about 7 different places within the ECU.

  100. Dear Sir Madam
We are after the following please advise:

obd 2 diagnostic cable and software for laptop to upload to 2018 Toyota Landcruiser 79 Series Diesel Dual Cab
    and to
Service different makes of vehicles, trucks and plant
Example VW Tourag release electronic hand brake to change rear pads

  101. I have a 2004 Chrysler Sebring convertible with the 2.7 V6 engine. I have not had it long but it keeps throwing up the code for a slow leak on the EVAP system. They keep resetting it but that is not curing the problem, now it is out of guarantee. I have done the obvious things like checking tubes and connections.

Unfortunately the Dealers here in Spain are not like we are used to in the UK and I don’t feel I could rely on them. They are also incredibly good at ripping you off (what main dealer isn’t?).

The obd2 software for windows 10 write up suggests that this is the all singing all dancing answer to my problem. What I need is something that can go into the EVAP system and pinpoint where the fault may be. I am good with tools so should be able to fix most things. I am more used to working on classic cars that fortunately have no electronics.

Please will you confirm that your tool will be able to enter the Chrysler brain and tell me what is wrong? I have no intention of messing with anything else. I need a good diagnostic tool that can pinpoint codes and offer some answers.

Basically looking for best obd2 software for windows.

  102. The link to the ‘free’ easyOBD software directs me to Xtools store for their TOAD software, which costs $77.

  103. I’ve been going through your site and am quite interested in Toad software.

However, I’m looking for one of the Tuners you have listed, that could work with a 2.5L 2008 VW Rabbit engine. These don’t appear to be on any of the lists (I even checked for 2.5L Golf just in case it’s a name change.)

Did I miss one? Is there any chance you might know of a tuner kit I could use? I am currently following advice off your “Can TOAD-pro Tune/Reprogram/Remap/Flash My Car’s ECU Chip?” webpage.

Any information could be helpful. Is this for obd2 software or ecu tuner?

My end goal (now) is to install an electric turbo (torque) on my Rabbit. However, I have been told an ECU tune would be necessary for any good gains.

  104. I am really impressed with the professional obd2 software for laptop. I’ve used a lot of different diagnostic software over the years, but those were easy to choose, seeing as how I was a mechanic in the military. I used what I was told to use.

But I’ve recently just begun my transition into the civilian sector and I was baffled as to the price of your typical software and/or scanner. I came across your program right before I got out of the Army, and I passed and spent way to much on a few different scanners. It was maddening.

So I was doing some research and I came back across your website about the toad obd2 software. I am so glad I purchased the software this time. And I’ll forever kick myself in the ass for not purchasing it the first time.

Needless to say, I have no intention on asking for a refund. I am quite interested in the pro license however. I’m not sure if I’m supposed to email support to acquire it, but when I click the link this is where it takes me. So hopefully you can help me out.

  105. Regarding the Toad obd2 software just bought from you…

I just spent a week working on my son’s 2006 Jeep Liberty (Cherokee). I installed brakes, removed the front of the car, replaced the camshaft timing belt, Water pump, removed the EGR and the butterfly valve assembly, catch can for the oil vapor in the Blow-by circuit, and want to load a tune which will make the unit run as it should.

It will only be used off highway. the air intake was a mess with the oils mixing with the hot exhaust and clogging all the sensors and making the car barely run.

I either want to load a tune I got off lost jeeps websites or re-tune the ECU myself. I am open to other solutions you may know about. In any case, the car is stuck in my shop until I accomplish this.

When successful, I will go after my 2008 Chevrolet 6.6 diesel. that unit also has an DPF as well as a EGR. then, my target will be a 2013 Mercedes GLK250 Bluetec.

I tell you this as it may effect the direction we head now. I am not against adding the urea to the exhaust as I appears to do no harm to the engine like the other systems.

in fact, I am wondering if a Bluetec type system could be added to a car after the fact to lower nox levels.

I am not against lowering emissions but am against ruining a fantastically efficient common rail diesel.

I think if you discard the urea injection system during a upgrade, you are throwing the baby out with the bath water. thank you for helping me out.

  106. Not a word about AlfaOBD. Must have for FCA vehicles. Available on Amazon for 50 bucks. Completely bidirectional. Allows you to turn on features, alter vehicle configuration such as installing LED lighting without canbus issues.

  107. Yes TOAD pro obd software is connecting through my adapter just fine and overall I’m satisfied with it. I only wish it was easier to program my ecu and could change my transmissions strategy to only use the oss instead of the oss and tss.

I recently put a 4r75w transmission in my f150 in place of the stock 4r70e, which uses the oss and tss where as the 75w only utilized the oss.

Was hoping that your program would be able to change that, however I’m still learning it so perhaps it can and I’m just not aware of it as of yet. But overall your program is great value for the price and would recommend it to others if asked.

  108. I have been looking into your automobile diagnostic obd2 software and had few questions after reading the information on the web site.

I have a 1985 Corvette with a 1226870 ECM that I have connected to and logged with TunerPro RT (obd2 programming software) on the 160 baud channel. Has Toad been set up with logging capabilities for this vehicle?

Can you import CSV files containing logged data exported from Tunerpro RT into TOAD-Pro obd2 software and use it’s graphing capabilities?

Is it possible to set up graphical presentations for different vehicles containing different PIDS and save their configuration/template so one just has to restore the template instead of having to set things up again from scratch when a different vehicle needs to be logged?

Toad website under TOAD OBD Software Features and Benefits mentions: Read the vehicle’s diagnostic trouble codes, live vehicle sensors (including wide-band O2 sensors), actuate bi-directional controls, reset adaptations, and view inspection/maintenance system test results to quickly determine what service the vehicle requires.

What bi-directional controls is TOAD capable of performing and can these be performed on most GM, Dodge, Lexus and Jeep vehicles? I was surprised by this bi-directional statement as in an online review I read Toad did not have this capability.

I purchased a OBDLink MX+ and thus have access to OBDWiz diagnostic software. Does TOAD scantool software have the ability to incorporate Manufacture’s Enhanced Diagnostics like OBDSoftware.net provides for OBDWiz ie: FCA Enhanced Diagnostics Add-on, or Toyota Enhanced Diagnostics Add on?

OBDLink MX+ supports advanced Ford & GM vehicle networks (MS-CAN and SW-CAN). Is TOAD obd software designed to access and present this information from these networks.

  109. These are simple obd2 software for laptop. Basically all qualify under “obd2 program”. None are best obd2 apps. Reason is car computer readers (generic) don’t neccessarily address systems other then engine/transmission. TOAD-Scan has worked to perform diagnoses to my 2016 Toyota Corolla whenever there is a need for reading codes or emissions test.

To have diagnoses on vehicles, firstly find the OBD-II connector which is typically located under the dash near the steering column, and plug the unit cable into that connector.

Then the code scanner/software is able to interface with the computers of those OBD2 vehicles to report trouble codes. Also, I can retrieve my car’s I/M readiness status to determine if my car can pass the state emission program. All in all, this is a really great choice as the first code reader for people who wants to start do-it-yourself car maintenance.

  110. Yes, the obd2 program is connecting to the ELM327 and the car. Handy automotive code reader. Used other obd2 programs on this page, however TOAD does the job decently, although not the best car computer reader. I have tried it on a number of other cars I own, Ford XR6 Falcon, RangeRover Evoque, Honda Accord, Mazda 3, Subaru XV, etc. Very happy with the software…

  111. I am impressed with your TOAD Pro Windows OBD Software, specially regarding
its diagnostic abilities, and would like to place an order. Would you be so
kind to provide some additional information regarding the possibility of
this software to decode and scale Mode 06 TIDs, CIDs (for non-CAN) and MIDs,
TIDs and UASIDs (for CAN equipped vehicles).

  112. The android car diagnostic app’s in comparison to these obd2 programs are at par. However obd2 software for laptop has an advantage of professionalism (like graphs easier to read/make out, all data displayed at once). It’s a small thing, but actually difference between treating the professional automotive diagnostic software as a novelty (toy for car enthusiasts), or something you’ll take seriously and actually end up fixing the issue yourself.

  113. Using the OBD 2 Auto Doctor. The obd2 software worked out of the box. The automatic VIN finder did not locate my car’s VIN so had to enter manually. After that, all worked well and helped with resolving my check engine light.

Live data graphing worked well. Had to download the manufactures software on computer to enable product registration and obtain updates for car diagnostic scan tool.

It took several tries to make this work. I tried to update all available updates but it took too long.

Otherwise will still need bidirectional scan tool or obd2 app that supports abs, airbag and such.

  114. I have read the page about TOAD-Pro and I need to know if it’s also able to read and clear temp and permanent stored errors codes for ABS, SRS, traction control… USA.

Already tried several laptop software solutions and carefully read their reviews. However most scantools, lack bidirectional. And those OBD2 scanners that do, basically lack wide vehicle support.

The customer experiences mainly come from those whose vehicle is compatible. But what if the engine type of vehicle is not supported? This is often unreported.

Then obd2 diagnostic tool with bi-directional support becomes mere generic obd reader.

  115. I have been looking into your automobile diagnostic software and had few questions after reading the information on the web site.

I have a 1985 Corvette with a 1226870 ECM that I have connected to and logged with TunerPro RT on the 160 baud channel. Has Toad been set up with logging capabilities for this vehicle?

    • Clarify whether asking about (obd2 program) OR (obd2 programming software)? Because they’re too different categories and shouldn’t be mixed up.

  116. It’s obvious dont have to be a mechanic or get a mechanic to resolve simple problems. These engine diagnostic software are exactly what I was looking for.

I was seeking out an automotive diagnostic scanner for laptop, but seems most were handhalf. Picked one of the car computer reader app on this page, and works like magic.

The vehicle diagnostics app was able to successfully reset MIL P1542 code after replacing the faulty cylinder in Volve. So great software + elm327 for volvo.

Also applied the car diagnostic download on cousins Ford 2020, and revealed problem with Tranmission after damage in offroading.

Now seeing the value of having own car diagnostic app. They can be genuine life saver in certain situations. In overal, happy with the purchase of car diagnostic software (using Surface Pro).

  117. I tried my Toyota mini-vcm cable, could not get it to function. I did get it to work with my elm327 Bluetooth device.

If I compare TechStream vs yours. Some how I felt it really did not do anything special. So far I am not seeing any advantage, yet I only used it briefly.
my issue is a Toyota 2004 4runner limited V8 4.7. crank no start. Changed a ton of replacement parts. I mean all of the common issues posted on Toyota 4runner.org. to no avail.

My hope your obd software would help expose the baffling issue. So today I used my acutel odbii product, and identified the issue. Fuel pump turns on, normal
Fuel pump relay stayed off. When I turned the key off, the relay turned on, which baffels my mind. At least now I have a starting point.

So my bunk cheep odbii won this round. I will be fine tuning after it stays running and I will try yours again.

  118. Just purchased TOAD software today, 21 Nov, to use on a 2013 Honda CR-V 2.2 with ongoing DPF and EGR problems which several garages have been unable to solve at great cost.

Your website states that you can access error codes for the DPF and EGR system and carry out a DPF static/forced regeneration.

In the software, there appears to be only a very limited default list of parameters which can be displayed/graphed/recorded. No extra PIDs are revealed after connecting to the vehicle.

In particular there is no access to DPF pressure sensor, soot loading or anything that can display the condition of this filter.
The Honda specific DPF light with ! returns every 9 miles or so after it is cleared but can only be cleared (as no error codes are produced) until a deliberate DPF sensor error is introduced. Clearing that, clears to DPF! light.

Nor can we find anything that allows a forced regeneration of the DPF which is now vital to prevent it from becoming so clogged that it will need replacement. We already have an actual gauge pressure reading of 4 PSI which we believe is high – needing the forced regen which we are unable to carry out.

From what analysis we have been able to do, there MAY be an EGR problem: during normal running, EGR Commanded goes to zero and EGR Error to 100% and sticks which doesn’t seem right.

  119. Used TotalDiagnostics TOAD on three different cars (audi, mercedes, honda), worked great every time. Cleared a code that never came back. Can’t beat the price. Maybe there are features that could be added but none of the important stuff is missing. In overall don’t know what other sissies are complaining about, I used many tools before.

  120. In order to program an OBD2 vehicle, a vehicle must first be equipped with an OBD2 adapter. This device is typically found underneath the steering column. Once installed, an OBD2 adapter plugs into the 16-pin connector located inside the car. There are several different types of OBDII software, and the type you choose will depend on your specific needs. Each program will provide different information. 132. I am in the business of scanning vehicles remotely using scan tools placed at a number of shops and am looking for new software to help better the user and customer experience with information provided from the scan tool.

The primary vehicles I focus on are VW/Audi/Porsche and have had hit or miss experiences with many other software manufacturers.

At this time, the two pass-thru devices installed on the tools are DG and CarDAQ to allow the use of some OEM software when needed.
